Honda Accord Type R 98 model... detailed answers please. I have no idea what a Vtec is/does. How you get it to "kick in" would be nice to know for i always thought it happened once i turned the key. Should be a great new experience this Vtec feeling.

Vtec stands for "Variable valve Timing and Electronic lift Control". It achieves this by using a two-stage cam profile. The lower profile is for economy and regular driving while the higher profile "kicks in" at a certain RPM range for increased power. By doing this, the Vtec engine is effectively able to provide both economy and power from a single engine design.
The high-profile stage usually triggers at 5500 to 6500 RPM. You will usually feel a surge in engine power when this happens. The feeling is normally more pronounced at coastal altitudes than inland due to the higher air-pressure.

when does vtec kick in?

hi.. i have a 1996 acura integra gsr... i want to know when the vtec kicks in.. i know it kicks around 5200 to 5700 rpms from what i heard.. but not sure... my brother had the same car but 1999... he had a light on the cluster that said vtec when it kicked in... im pretty sure is a wire from the computer or engine that he hooked up to the dashboard to alert him when vtec kicked in.. my question is how do i know which wire to use... alll i need is a light to show me when vtec kicks in... any sites i could go to.. please help... thanks
