My first Nubian Kid(baby goat)?

Kate

Okay so I will soon be getting my first goat that will be proably 2weeks old and will be bottle fed still. Could anyone give me tips on shelter, food, bottle formula, where to purchase, how much per amount of time, how often, fencing, toys, and names?

thankss
How much would it cost to get shipped from VA to PA?

Answer
What you are asking, requires an extremely long detailed answer. but i will do my best.

Okay. 2 weeks old, is in my opinion too soon to get a kid. 4 weeks is what i do.

Please Please Please. get at least 2, unless it will be house-trained and kept in the house. They are social creatures.

Okay. shelter, it will need something it can fully stand in and turn around. For a nubian or 2. i think a 5x8 run in shed is a good start. That would be minimum. you want room for it to walk around when the weather is bad, and a place for hay, and water.

Food: at 2 weeks it won't really be eating much hay/grain, which is why i recommend waiting till it is 4 weeks. at that age it should be eating hay/grain. He/she will need to be fed whatever it is used to getting fed. such as whole cow milk, or milk replacer, a sudden change will result in loose stool and a very stressed out goat. milk replacer can be found at your local feed store, i use purina kid milk replacer.

A nubian kids feeding schedule here is : newborn-1 day: fed every 4 hours, at about 4 ounces. or however much it will take.
after day one: fed 4 times a day usually about 4-6 ounces.
2 weeks. down to 3 times a day, getting 8-10 ounces or so.
4 weeks 2 times a day getting 12-14 ounces. gradually increasing up to NO MORE than 16-18 ounces. depending on its size. The most i have ever fed was 20 ounces to a huge doe kid. and only 2 times a day. at 4 weeks it should start eating hay and grain well.
8 weeks: 16 ounces 1x a day. until its about 10 weeks. you can either wean it, or keep it on a bottle.

Fencing. it so totally depends on how much land your gonna fence. a small pen i would use chain link kennel. or a larger area cattle panels would be best. but it may be able to climb through it until it is a few months old. so beware.

toys, anything climbable with no hole for a leg to get stuck in. some goats really like basketballs/soccer balls. just make it "kid"safe.

Honestly, PA to VA is not that bad, i live on the eastern shore of MD, and i have drove as far as Maine. but my guess would be around 100-200. depending on who delivers it.

If you have further questions feel free to e-mail me at foxfirenubians@aol.com

I'd be glad to help

What Toys should my 9 month old Son play with?

lisa11oz

Answer
Look on the tags for the age label. You should stick to age appropriate toys to avoid choking hazards. I believe at this age you still want to stick to the rule that if they toy can fit through a toilet paper roll it is probably to small. Playskool has a large cubed toy that has cut outs for shapes. Inside you find the shapes to fit in the spaces. I am pretty sure this is a 6 month and older toy. Get things that have bright colors and have texture. Babies learn with their eyes, hands and through their mouths. That is why the stick everything in their mouths. We have a little dinosaur that has different textures, bright stripes, poke-dots, and solid colors, it also has a triangle teething toy attached and a rattle. Both of my boys loved this thing. We also had a pop-car. If you pulled back on it it would take off. This seemed to interest both of my boys that it helped them crawl. You can find a lot of good stuff. We have a book with pictures of animals and colors that is really fun.

Best toys for 7 to 9 month old boy?

Roland'sMo

Any suggestions on good educational toys? Things to promote learning, crawling, walking, etc?
Thanks in advance!

Answer
I think the best toys for that age is activity tables. They can pull up on them and stand and walk around them to do the activities that the table has on top.
Have fun

how do you edit videos?

Answer
For the funny thing, should initiate a storyboard, script, line up actors with funny faces? and finally shoot. Then do post production-> edit..combine diff shoots, cut/crop or what not, enhance thru transitions/ effects/ filters, provide emphasis thru recorded audience laughter & generate emotion thru background music...don't forget the titles and sub-titles of course.

Video Editing Process

for starters, free Windows Movie Maker (XP-wmm2 & Vista-wmm6) provides simple & easy way to learn the ropes < click help for details>. For enhanced effects, try SpiceFx by Pixelan. Venture into other video editing app ( http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/powerdirector-review.html ) accdg. to need & skill level.
(*Note: if video file is not supported, import vcam files separately via win explorer- Hdd (USB connect vcam to pc); DvD (pc reader); Flash Media (card reader) & convert- try Prism, Super, Windows media encoder, etc.)

Steps:
CAPTURE VIDEO : video stream from tape-based Vcam
a.) Connect miniDV or digi-8 vcam to pc via FIREWIRE cable (4 or 6 pin) for best transfer (USB w/quality concern)
b.) Set vcam mode to playback, set for capture, pause
c.) Open wmm and set to TASKS pane
d.) Click Capture from video device; wmm controls vcam operations- on play, video stream is captured to wmm/COLLECTION
IMPORT FILES : from pc folder
e.) Import video files* (if supported- USB connect vcam to pc OK)
f.) Import other files: pics, music, narration, laughter
EDIT MOVIE: create movie as a project
g.) Drag&drop video files from collection to TIMELINE chart below at the desired sequence
h.) Enhance video: drag&drop music, effects, transition, filter; create titles…re-edit as you wish
FINISH MOVIE: render muvee file
i.) Render/Save MUVEE to pc and/ or share- CD; Save PROJECT (work-in-progress) for future edits.
Finally, SHARE:
j.) Burn to DVD*** (wmm2 only on CD)
** Most video editing app include DVD authoring, otherwise, use DVD authoring programs, e.g., WinDVD, Nero, Encore, etc.

whats the cheapest way to build an adult ecommerce toy store?

Superstar

Answer
We built a nice, inexpensive store for a client using AspDotNetStoreFront - they have the ability to upload products from a spreadsheet from the toy distributor and we were able to bulk upload product photos. Overall it took us less than a day to build the store & populate it with about 5,000 products. for a small catalog - (under 100 products) nopCommerce is free - but ncurrently does not offer a bulk upload.

yeah I give it about a 4/10.

I was never a fan of the toys as a kid, and the first G.I. Joe movie was a little better with Marlon Wayans.

Watching G.I. Joe 2 last week was terrible spending $19.95 on a single I MAX ticket. The Rock was great, but Bruce Willis was just... OLD.

Have you ever known a baby/toddler that's just not interested in trying to walk?

Beachy Kee

My son is 17 months old and not walking still. I know he could if he tried, but he's just flat out not interested. lol If you hold out a finger for him to hold on to he'll walk around fine, but doesn't want to try it out on his own. My 1st son was super determined and tried and tried to walk until he got it. My 17 month old doesn't care if he has to crawl forever. Anyone else know a toddler that just wasn't interested in walking?

Answer
yes that is fine that he isn't walking yet! the fact that he will walk when you are holding him it is great it means he can do it he just dosnt want to yet! all babies develop in their own time. you should get some push along toys that will encourage him to walk, dont try and "make" him walk because he wont he will do it in his own time. just encourage him through the environment like toys etc.

My blind toddler wont walk!?

Katie

Hello, can anyone give me the best tips for getting my blind toddler to walk! he will be 2 in December and hes getting rather heavy to carry everywhere! He was born blind, we do have specialists visit us at home for eg, physio, occupational therapist, visual impaired teacher etc, they do give us exercises to do but i was just wondering if any other parent or carer could give me a few extra hints or tips that in there experience helped or worked wonders for them! I have tried different toys etc just out of his reach but he will not move to find the objects he just gets frustrated with himself.

Thank you!

Answer
Continue as you are, but maybe use a baby walker, this will help him realise that he CAN walk and stand on his own. You should think of getting a strong one since he is quite a lot older than they are designed for, or ask your therapists if they have details of an alternative.
If he is too big for them then maybe buy a push along trolley or another push along item (such as a dolly pram). This will help him hold on to something when walking.

This site has all sorts of other tips and suggestions about blind infants and their development, including a chart of development ages. (e.g. 9 months- play with toy etc.)

What to get kids for christmas?

jzero03

I have nephews in 7th grade and 5th grade. I also have a niece in first grade. In addition to these kiddies, I have an 8 month old god-daughter. Not having any children of my own and being a high school teacher, I'm not sure what kids these ages would like. At times, I feel kids are growing too "mature" too quickly and the toys that I think would be appropriate would seem childish. So, any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

The boys don't seem to be into sports that much-they like video games, but I think they need to be more active than sitting in front of a TV, so that may help you give me some ideas. The niece seems interested in everything and the baby...i don't know-she's not walking or crawling yet, but seems to be almost there.

Again, any help would be really appreciated!

Answer
You're the aunt, so you want to give them something FUN but not break the bank. I've got a great solution that's easy, fun and even educational (for the teacher in you!). Perplexus maze. They are very challenging 3D maze games, that even adults become addicted to. Better than video games, yet still appeal to the video-gamers. (see the website below and watch the video to see it in action.) They learn problem solving, patience, balance.....all while having fun with this amazing game that is impossible to put down. Parents love it because a) it's not a video game, and b) it requires no batteries and c) it's portable...for those car rides/airplane. Check it out. Your nephews and nieces will love it. There are 3 different types Original, Epic and Rookie. Try Rookie for your first grader (it's a bit easier, but still challenging) and the older two could each get a different one, Epic for one, Original for the other. There's even a smaller version with two balls so kids can challenge each other to see who finishes first. A great gift! You'll be the most popular aunt this Christmas!

Who would help dig for a swimming pool?

Chris

We had purchased an above ground swimming pool as a surprise for our kids and the money we had put up to hire someone with equipment to dig and level off our yard, had to go to a LARGE bill that we were blind sided by. Now we have a swimming pool but can not afford much to get the spot leveled for it. Our family does not go on vacations, to amusement parks, or water parks because we work just to keep our heads afloat, so we got the swimming pool as something for our family to enjoy. We were planning to have the pool up by Memorial Day but that is not looking too promising now, and I dread telling the kids that there will not be a pool put up this year because they have also worked very hard to earn it. It would take way too long for us to dig with shovels, not to mention the lack of time due to work we would be digging at odd times. I am hoping to find or be referred to someone with the proper equipment to dig and level, who does not charge a ton of money. I do not want to seek credit because we can't afford debt.
Thank you to all who has taken the time to read my odd request/search post, and thank you for anyone who might be able to point me in the right direction.
We are in Northern Kentucky.

Answer
Sounds like you need someone to level a spot for you to erect the above ground pool. Depending on access and the terrain, you could do it yourself with a Bobcat rental, provided you knew how to run it. Or maybe even a farmer down the street with a tractor and a 'dozer blade could do it. Try checking on Craigslist or similar. A couple links below if you are in N KY close to Cincinnati.

Any ideas for Mickey Mouse party favors for kids under age 2?

libramoon9

I am having a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse birthday party for my daughter's 2nd birthday and there will only be two other kids there but they are about 5 to 6 months younger then my daughter and I am trying to keep everything Mickey Mouse and Friends related but I can't for the life of me think of any party favors to get for them. All the actual party favor stuff you can buy is not age appropriate, like small bouncy balls, stickers and stuff like that will all go straight in their mouths lol. I was thinking about getting them each a Micky Mouse sippy cup and maybe a plush character, but can you think of anything else that you think a child this age would enjoy that can be Mickey Mouse?

Answer
I think the the sippy cup and plush character ideas are good ones.

Disney Pook a looz are adorable but a little expensive for a favour:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dtoys-and-games&field-keywords=pook+a+looz+&x=14&y=21

But these Pook a looz topplers are considerably cheaper.
http://www.amazon.com/Minnie-Mouse-Pook-Looz-Topplers/dp/B0041XDUBS

You could use cups like these at the party:
http://www.birthdaydirect.com/mickey-mouse-clubhouse-disposable-sippy-cups-p-24490.html?osCsid=3jtip4sop893soi5v0309dhq01
and then send them home as party favours.

Same for bowls:
http://www.amazon.com/The-First-Years-Y9102-Toddler/dp/B002HRFNVK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307351393&sr=8-1
http://www.amazon.com/Mickey-Mouse-Clubhouse-Bowl/dp/B0047J9C6I/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1307351500&sr=8-19

A spoon and fork set will come in handy:
http://www.amazon.com/Disney-Mickey-Mouse-Clubhouse-Flatware/dp/B001UNNDVE/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1307351567&sr=8-9

Board books are good and inexpensive if you give each child a couple of books from the set:
http://www.amazon.com/Mickey-Mouse-Clubhouse/dp/141277571X/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1307351168&sr=1-3

Bath toys are another good idea:
http://www.amazon.com/Disney-Mickey-Mouse-Clubhouse-6-Pc/dp/B004L28TII/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307351781&sr=8-1

I need an alternative to cake for a toddler's 2 year birthday?

Stephanie

My son isnt a "sweets" kinda kid. He enjoys all kinds of fruit however. I have seen how you can carve a basket out of a watermelon and think something similar would be a cute alternative like a car or truck or something "boyish". Any ideas how to do it websites would be great! Thanks!

Answer
Listen to Christopher! It does take alot of time and practive to do crafty carvings! Your two year old wont remember the time and effort you put into such crafting. If you are having a party, why dont you have cake anyway, however, add his favorite fruit somehow in a creative manner. For some kids, it is all about the presentation! He will be too busy with his guests and toys to worry about anything else! Try the following website for some kid friendly ideas! Good luck! (I just went through a two year old birthday myself, and chose the easy route of ordering a cake from the nearest bakery! She didnt eat cake, but she enjoyed blowing out the candles and picking the Minnie Mouse toy toppings off of the cake!)

Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace's voice?

Neighborho

Am I the only one who thinks his voice is absolutely amazing? Have many of you heard some of Our Lady Peace's music? Especially the older stuff?

I think he has one of the most unique and talented voices of all musical history. Check out these songs by OLP:

* Blister
* Car Crash
* Naveed
* Clumsy
* Superman's Dead

Answer
His voice is certainly one of the more unique voices out there. His vocal work peaked on either the 'Happiness is not a Fish That You Can Catch' album or 'Spiritual Machines'. The two albums since that were too over-produced and his creativeness were lacking. The new album 'Burn Burn' will be more like the raw sound from Clumsy and Naveed. I can't wait.

Why are kids' toys so terrible these days?

By the Way

Every toy I see nowadays is just bad in some way. Some of the toys are REALLY cheesy and just look like such crap in comparison to what I had. Just look at what they did to Polly Pocket and Littlest Pet Shop. Now they look possessed! And Bratz is TERRIBLE! What a horrible idea for a toy.

I'm not sure why the toys nowadays are way worse for our kids in terms of teaching them bad morals (i.e. Bratz), but I'm guessing that they're such cheese now because parents are afraid that their kids my choke on the toys. Alright, I get that you're trying to protect your kids an all, but I think I'm with George Carlin on this one. The kid who swallows too many marbles doesn't get to grow up and have kids of his own. It's called natural selection. And I don't think we should let it make the toys we give our children ugly, cheap-looking, and boring. I mean that has to be the reason that toys suck so much now...

Answer
some toys have gotten worse, but others have improved. I think what's causing such a glut of awful toys is how cheap they are to produce. Toys that are made from molded plastic are everywhere. Many of them are not high quality toys that last years. Some break within an hour of when you give them to the child.

Wood, rubber, cloth and metal used to be the primary materials in children's toys. Many toys used to be handmade, or at least hand assembled. Now production costs and material costs are so low that it is no wonder companies will push out tons of awful stuff and then just see what sells and push out more of that. Of course parents end up paying much less for their kids' toys, so that's why it keeps going on despite the fact that there are many high quality toys being produced today. If parents spent most of their toy money on well-crafted toys, then that's what you'd so the mots of on the shelves.

Like I said, there are good toys out there if you're willing to pay what parents used to pay for toys. Video games have gotten cheaper and are much better than ever before. Rokenbok's will take a licking. The market for play figurines though is pretty much taken over by the junky plastic stuff.

click here if your concerned about lead in toys!!?

Q. not all chinese toys are bad most are good dont buy stuff with paint that peels if you scratch it dont buy auqua dots or polly pockets!!!!!!!!!everyone thinks all toys made in china have lead or something bad on it! thats kind of offensive ! ok!!!!!!!!thell your friens!!!!!!just because poeple made a mistake that doesnt mean you should cut off chineas toys and only buy american products !!!!!!those poeple work hard so your kid can be happy and have fun dont do that to them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...ps they are dumbos caus there too cheap to use safe paint im a kid if you keep buying american products companys go bankrupt and oops!no toys for us!

Answer
Once or twice is a mistake. Hundreds of different toys is negligence. I prefer to stay on the safe side and steer clear of chinese made toys until they get their act together. I'm not saying we should stop importing permanently. But China should be cut off until their toys consistently reach a safe rating again. You'll understand the anxiety when you get older and have your own children.
By the way, don't worry about not having any toys. If these companies go bankrupt, there are a million other companies, both American and from other, safer countries.

I read it a long time ago, and the only things I can remember from it were a redheaded girl (I'm fairly certain she was something of a witch, or at least one of the characters associated her with fire). I remember there being something about Italy and the festival where everyone wears masks... any help with this is greatly appreciated.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firestarter

Firestarter is a novel by Stephen King originally published in 1980. It was serialized in Omni magazine prior to being published.

The title character of Firestarter is Charlene "Charlie" McGee, a young girl possessing many potential abilities, amongst them most notably pyrokinesis; the ability to create fire with her mind. Charlie is a mutant, she was born with her abilities due to her parents, Andrew "Andy" McGee and Vicky Tomlinson, having participated in a mysterious government-funded experiment during college. Both parents had been injected amounts of a drug known as Lot Six, which, among other things, had been proven to alter the subject's chromosomes and pituitary gland.

As a major effect of the Lot Six, Andy developed telepathic hypnosis, a mind control ability he calls the "push", the ability to create a state of extreme suggestion in the victim's mind. Vicky developed minor telekinesis, the extent of her power being able to close a refrigerator door from across the room. Both of their powers are almost insignificant compared to the latent power of Charlie, who at one point is suspected of eventually being able to create a nuclear explosion from sheer will alone. It is also revealed that these powers are self-destructive; prolonged use of the "push" causes Andy to suffer devastating headaches, and eventually, a brain aneurysm.

The government agency that sponsored the original drug trials, The Shop, regarded the experiment as a failure, with one member stating that humans were simply not evolved yet to make full use of the drug. However, although they unanimously regarded Andy and Vicky as useless test subjects and dead ends, it was also unanimously agreed that Charlie was a groundbreaking development, and as a result, the McGee family was placed under surveillance for around seven years.

Due to a mistake made by Shop agents, Vicky was unnecessarily murdered and Charlie kidnapped. Using "the push", Andy is able to rescue Charlie and the two live together for several years as fugitives, moving whenever Andy feels the Shop may be catching up to them. After several near misses with Shop agents, the McGees find temporary refuge with Irv and Norma Manders, who were a friendly old-fashioned couple living on a remote farm. The farm is then sieged. Due to this event, the McGees are able to elude the Shop for a short time, holing up at Andy's grandfather's lake cabin in Vermont for several months. However, the event also draws renewed interest into the project from the Shop, eventually leading to the introduction of John Rainbird, a dangerous Native American.

For six months, the McGees are prisoners of the Shop, who perform extensive tests to study their powers. Charlie McGee resolves not to use her ability and is an unwilling prisoner for the majority of the time, Andy, however, breaks down and becomes an overweight, apathetic subject, living comfortably in the Shop complex. Although he cooperates with the scientists, Andy is disappointed and distraught to find that his push power has seemingly abandoned him, and he gradually becomes helplessly and hopelessly addicted to the drug Thorazine, which the Shop is using to sedate and control him.

Eventually, an unprecedented thunderstorm creates a blackout in the facility, which sets in motion two very important events: John Rainbird is able to gain Charlie's trust by masquerading as a complex janitor with a troubled past, and Andy McGee, in a subconscious effort of will, manages to "push" himself into losing his drug addiction, thus regaining his mental power as well as the will to escape and live again. For a period of several weeks after, Andy uses his ability to manipulate the Shop personnel, notably Captain James Hollister (aka Cap), the head of the Shop, into helping him, while John Rainbird slowly encourages Charlie to start using her powers and participating in the Shop's experiments. It is revealed that Charlie's powers are developing along with the rest of her body, presumably once she hits puberty, they will progress to something far beyond simple pyrokinesis.

Andy is finally able to communicate with Charlie again for the first time since their capture by passing her a note, but his plan goes awry when Rainbird discovers his scheme and meets them at their rendezvous point. Andy is then shot by Rainbird and dies, from a combination stroke and bullet wound. In their last conversation before he dies, Andy tells Charlie to, "burn it all down", finally breaking her complex that using her abilities was wrong. She honors his last request, incinerating the entire Shop headquarters, killing Rainbird, Cap and dozens others and making her escape.

Charlie returns to the Manders, who take her in until she recovers. The Shop, however, with new management, is now actively hunting Charlie. The book ends with Charlie offering her story to the magazine Rolling Stone. She hopes that revealing her story will make it impossible for The Shop to kidnap and harm her again.

how is cow milk different from goats milk?

jlinglesto

Answer
Goat's milk is the closest to human breast milk.

Goat milk is naturally homogenized. That means the fats in the milk are very small, and evenly distributed throughout the milk.

Cows milk is artificially homogenized. The milk is forced at high speed through a tiny strainer to break up the fat molecules.

The fats in cows milk that are artificially broken up like that are actually harmful to the human body.

"The natural homogenization of goat milk is, from a human health standpoint, much better than the mechanically homogenized cow milk product. It appears that when fat globules are forcibly broken up by mechanical means, it allows an enzyme associated with milk fat, known as xanthine oxidase to become free and penetrate the intestinal wall. Once xanthine oxidase gets through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream, it is capable of creating scar damage to the heart and arteries, which in turn may stimulate the body to release cholestrol into the blood in an attempt to lay a protective fatty material on the scarred areas. This can lead to arteriosclerosis. It should be noted that this effect is not a problem with natural (unhomogenized) cow milk. In unhomogenized milk this enzyme is normally excreted from the body without much absorption."

Goat milk is higher in most trace minerals, and vitamin that the human body needs. An exception is iron (only slightly less than cow milk), which is interesting, because goat meat has more iron than beef.

Some questions about cows?

Mountain L

Yes i know this is the horse section, and horses are very different from cows, but i honestly had no idea where else to ask. So today during dinner my dad said he wanted to buy a cow. I was all for it until he said the only reason he wanted to buy one was so he could keep it for a year and then send it off to slaughter. I was not for that. In my opinion, it was like saying buy a horse only to kill it, or a dog. To me, once we buy a pet it is part of the family.

So how can i convince my dad that buying a cow would be a good idea, but not just for the fun of killing it later!

Also, we have a place to keep it. 160 acres of pasture land at out second house an hour away in the country. How much would we need to be around to own a cow. We could go up maybe once or twice a week to check on it. Would that be ok? Its not like they eat grain or supplements like horses do. Or do they?

Last, this is just something in the back of my head that my friend mentioned long ago. If i did 4h with my cow, do they always kill the cows afterwards, or is that like optional? Sorry, i know i sound like a total baby like "oooooh no don't kill it!", but i am a total tree hugger and i couldnt stand buying an animal only to get it fat and kill it. Dont tell me to get over myself. Id rather not buy a cow, then buy one and kill it.

Only nice, helpful suggestions please!

Answer
Your dad has a wonderful idea.

Do you know where your beef comes from? Beef cows (usually) don't get to walk around on pasture and eat grass.
They get cooped up their entire lives in places like this:
http://www.gov.mb.ca/agriculture/livestock/beef/images/baa09s00a.jpg
They are stuffed with antibiotics, and when you eat the cows, the antibiotics increase your tolerance to human medicine, which is very bad! They are also stuffed with growth hormones that make them grow bigger, those hormones are then passed on to the people who eat the cow and can cause all sorts of bad things.
Those cattle don't get to eat grass. They are grain fed. Usually that grain is made from beef by-products, which means they are feeding cows to cows. This greatly reduces their nutritional value.
Beef that you buy from almost ANY supermarket is much lower in nutrition and much higher in fat. They are not treated well. It's basically abuse for their entire lives and then they are slaughtered. End of story.

If your dad were to buy a cow, he would be giving it a MUCH better life than most beef farmers ever would. It would be organic meat and would be much healthier for you and your family to eat. It would live a much happier and healthier life.

I know you don't want to see it get slaughtered, but it's much better to eat meat from a cow that you gave a good life than to eat meat from supermarkets and continue support the horrible beef industry. By raising your own cow, even if it's just one cow, it's a step in the right direction. The more people who give beef cattle good lives, mean less cows abused on feed lots.

What toys should I get my two year old?

Steve

I'm adopting a boy who will be two years old when we bring him home. I want to teach him that material goods aren't everything, so I don't want to buy him a lot of toys. I've already gotten him some Duplo blocks and a toy dump truck, but I need other ideas. Preferably, the toys would be simple, make little electronic noise, and be still interesting as he gets older.

Answer
I got my daughter this almost like a lesson plan called wowkits and it pretty much show u different activites u can do with your tot that helps with motor skills, language and so forth n it also gets him/her to interact with u n bond. It comes with some toys or u can buy some of the toys on the sight that r educational n not very expensive. I also do the baby signing time with my daughter n she just LOVe the dvd's because of the music. I think if u can try n teach him baby signing. It's a great bonding experience!.. and if he can't talk much or is to shy to talk he can learn to communicate his needs threw his hands:) if ur just curious about the wowkits or baby signing time u can just look them up on youtube;) oh n a watertable with boats might be fun for him in the summer time;)

Toys that encourage an almost two year old to talk more?

dreamsofam

I'm attending a friend's party tomorrow for her daughter who will be turning two. I'm very concerned about her little ones speech. Both of the little girl's parents spoil her rotten in the area of speech and don't require her to talk. They just give her what she wants and let her get away with pointing, crying, and grunting and other gestures that don't require her to vocalize. I don't want to ruin the friendship by bringing this up. So, the question is: Is there a toy that would encourage my friend's daughter to talk more? (I've already researched this and found the idea of mom role playing with daughter with a voice recorder, tea set, and pretending they are at the zoo. So, I need something different)
I'm a K-8 special education teacher. I'm well aware that every child develops at a different rate. The situation with my friends and their child is extreme and is painful for me to watch and see her so catered to. If it wasn't an extreme case, I would ignore it because I value my friendship with the child's parents. However, I also value a child's right to not be held back by a parent's enabling behavior.
So many wonderful ideas! Thanks to all of you who gave ideas that answered my question and didn't go off topic with a lecture that I didn't need. Also, some of the ideas you all gave though they are not appropriate for this year (due to the fact that some toys can only be purchased online and I need the gift today and some are not activities she can do by herself) I WILL keep them in mind for the years to come. Most of you set me up with ideas not only for this year but for the years to come...THANKS!

Can I get some help with cheap/tough toys for big birds? What is safe for DIY? Rope/wood/metal?

sciencechi

I am volunteering at a zoo and helping to care for most of the birds, ranging from a ton of budgies and cockatiels to cockatoos and a military macaw.

The birds haven't been getting a on of enrichment stuff, so I was thinking about ways to keep them busy. I feel bad because many of them are likely very bored. Some have toys, but they don't get changed around as much. They also have people walking by them all day, but they don't get that much one on one interaction with people they know.

I have been thinking of trying to give them more whole chunks of fruit, like a whole orange or a big chunk of watermelon rind, or small pumpkin once I can get them. It may be tough to be able to grab enough for everyone though.

What kinds of rope can I use to maybe start stringing up their food to give them something to pick at? What is safe to secure it with?

It can be tough to clean the cages and constantly replace things, so while I understand they need to destroy things stuff that will last as long as possible is preferred.

I don't have a ton of money to spend on this stuff either, so easy to find inexpensive things are preferred.

I know that is a lot to ask, so thanks in advance to anyone that responds!

Answer
Hi boy do I have alot of things that may help you...First off I think that if you posted a wanted ad for baby toys such as rattlers crib toys etc on your local Craigslist you might get alot of responses.. I personally go to alot of garage sales and buy them and then I take them apart and reuse them in toy making.. Some of them can just be washed and hung in the cage the way they are .. Second of all if you contact a local furniture maker and ask them what do they do with thier leather cut offs.. Most places simply throw them away so they might be willing to let you come and take a box or two.. Tell them why you want them and possibly see if you could put a small sign near the birds area that says what companies have donated stuff in the care of the birds.. Ok ropes or plastic chain all good you can go to farm and fleet and get plastic chain there pretty cheap and also marine rope .. Other ropes that can be used are sisal but that might be expensive especially if you need it in bulk.. I use zinc free wire that you can buy at home depot menards lowes ... It is harmless to the birds and it is indestructable you can use that to string stuff on and attatch to the cage.. Also with the furniture maker ask about the wood cuts again they throw them away they are untreated and alot of it is really good hard woods.. Anything like buttons dollar store small frisbees plastic lids old tupperware all good stuff to make toys out of.. I also go to home depot and get the stainless steel washers carriage bolts and nuts these are awesome items to put on a toy especially a cockatoo or macaw would love this they like to tinker with stuff... Whew ok depending on where you live ( California for instance ) wooded areas with manzanita trees make the neatest perches and can also be cut into rounds for toy making..But ask land owner first ;-) shells and pumice can also be used just make sure that they have been washed thouroughly .. To make dies for the leathers and woods use food coloring and water simple huh... Food can be the easiest of all Grocery store throw out foods that have expired but there is nothing wrong with them see if you have a local store that will let you take the fruits and vegies... They do here so I would assume that you could any where again remind folks that it is for the animals and thie names would be on the plaque.. People will be more likely to give if it benefits them right... Now for a simple easy vegie or fruit holder take a yogurt cup drill a few holes around the outside and thru the bottom take a half an apple or whatever ( make sure the seeds are out of the apple they are toxic to birds )shove a piece of the wire thru it attach a large washer to the end of the wire pull the wire thru the cage and wrap around the bar once or so... Walla holds the food and gives the birds something to chew on as well.. I also take small suet holders for outside birds and stuff it with romaine leaves kale mustard greens turnip greens close it then hook to inside cage perfect food holder !!! Another great thing is old phone books birds like to shred paper you can take an old phone book or paperback drill a hole thru it add a rope with a knot then maybe a piece of wood or a shell hang in the cage ... I also buy from the dollar store natural wooden rings these make great swings or you can make a design in the center and hang it or just hang it the way it is... I usally buy as many as they have in stock that way whe they run out ( and they have ) I still have plenty..if you take the wisps of bark off of a tree that can also be used to weave thru the cage bars make sure they are untreated and bird safe trees first tho.. I could go on and on oh goodness almost forgot this one wiffle balls string wire and rope thru it tie a knot at the ends of the rope so it cant be pulled thru use the wire to attach stuff like drilled out dice nuts washer anything you can think of that will last a long time straws are another cheap way to make a toy that birds like to chew on take a zip tie wrap it around a good bunch of straws and tighten hang from cage .. Easy huh pasta is another real cheap item you can use in making toys get the big pinwheels those seem to work the best for me ...all you need is a small tool box a drill and a jigsaw .. Plastic 3 gallon generic ice cream containers are awesome for left over coloring it can be stored in that untill next time you need to use it... I usually buy that online it is cheaper and you can get it in bulk... Well I hope I gave you some ideas I have a bunch more and all used in my home let me know how it goes I would be very interested to see your progress .. If you dont have tools again garage sales are the best way to go about getting them Good luck!!!!!

What is Educational Learning Toys?

rockethead

Answer
Anything that causes the person to use their imagination. Three straws and masking tape can turn into the handles to a space ship. A cardboard box can become a ship sailing on the ocean. Some say you have to go out and buy educational toys and of course there are many wonderful ones in the store, but look around your house before you go spending a lot of money because most things you can buy can be made out of household items and may be much better appreciated. My sister's grandson tapes together wooden blocks to form the most wonderful jets, boats and gears for his imaginary vehicles. He is five. He may become and aircraft designer who knows. He also is the one
who came up with taping the straws together to make the handles to his spaceship. Being creative is in all of us. Just provide the toilet paper cylinders, or empty oatmeal containers and watch your child come up with his own educational learning toys. Or if you really want to buy something to teach a specific skill Lakeshore is the best place to look,my opinion.

what are the best learning toys?

Mommy to K

my goddaughter is going to be one and i want to get her some learning toys but i am not sure where to start. I plan on shopping at target if that will help. Her mom wants educational toys but i want things that are fun and that will grow as she grows. what are the best brands i get lost everytime i venture into the baby and toy section at target. HELP
her birthday is september 11.

Answer
I agree leapfrog is excellent. Most toys for children that age provide some sort of learning. You could also go with the tried and true...Fisher Price and Play Skool. Although, they are not always branded as learning...they do allow imaginative play that is lost with so many of the technical toys.

What do your kids want for Christmas?

Diane

Or what do you plan on getting them?

What are they going to be for Halloween?

BQ: Would you ever go to Disney World on Halloween, Christmas, or any other holiday? Why or why not?

Answer
EVERYTHING!!!!! Both of them want everything they see in every ad on TV and every catalogue for every toy store we can get to! It's driving me crazy!!! I'm scouring catalogues right now to see what's best for them. At least my 4yr old son can tell me what he wants (cars and Ben 10 related mostly), but my 2yr old daughter is all guess work.

As for Halloween, my son wants to be a vampire and my daughter will have a cute little witches outfit. We won't go trick or treating though, it's not really done where I live sadly... :( But we will have a trick or treat party at home for them!

No. Absolutely not. Too many people, lack of tradition, especially at Christmas. Halloween, OK, maybe, and I'd be open to a holiday themed trip right before or right after the actual holiday, but not on the actual day.

What are the names of these 2 children's books?

Pastrygirl

1.) The book is about a kid who gets a puppy for Christmas, and as the puppy grows, it has to have a bigger basket. I used to love this book, But I can't recall what it is called.

2.) The other book is about a red digging tractor, I think her name is Kate or something like that....I thought the name Mulligans entered into it somewhere, but can't find anything having to do with it. I know they dig a cellar to a building, but forget to leave a way out, so the townspeople have to help them get out.

These are two old books...problem is they are not quite old enough to be called antiques, so it is really hard to find them without a name.

Answer
The second is definitely "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel," already a classic when I was a little girl. http://www.amazon.com/Mike-Mulligan-His-Steam-Shovel/dp/0395259398 (The steam shovel is Mary Anne.)

i have a ground hog in my backyard ...?

PV

my kids and i loved seeing it everyday at first... when it's home was in the shrubs behind my house... but now it has been digging under my deck and it has gotten too close to my screen door and i'm worried it'll get close to my kids..how can i shoo it a way without hurting it?

Answer
Groundhogs are shy critters. I had one burrow under the front stoop. It lived there for one season and never showed itself when we were coming and going. It certainly came out to eat my Petunias, though! ha ha

If you want the groundhog gone from your property you will need to trap and relocate it. Groundhogs are territorial and will return to their burrow if not moved a good distance. Once removed, fill in and seal off its' burrow. Otherwise, you are inviting any other local groundhogs to move in to the vacant burrow. Check with your local animal shelter to see if they loan out animal traps. Ours does. If not, you can order Havahart traps online or buy them at stores like Tractor Supply and Southern States.

Answer
Baby registries, my saviour .

They are something most stores that carry quality baby items have, where you can make a list of baby things you'd like or need, for now, in the future, whatever . I have one at Toys R Us for both of my kids that I keep updated because I'm one of those people who knows what my kids need or want but not so big on being given things .

Do you guys think I am a spoiled kid?

onsobored

my friends say im spoiled because i always have money to spend on myself and them(i get them 30+ dollor presents for christmases, birthdays, and cards for every holiday i can think of. (the friends i am talking about are 4 BEST friends that ive known since kindergarden) i dont have a scheduled chore list, all my mom asks me to do is wash the dishes and clean my room(i dont get allowance) and gives me 10 dollors every time i pamper her for an hour(wich im happy to do, i love my mom.) and when im with my dad who i see every other weekend(two weekends a month, div. parents) my dad takes me on little adventures to to stores in LA mainly Amoeba records. i dont do that every time im with him. also, my mother gives me 20 bucks a week for food at school (3-5 bucks a day depending on what/if i buy) and some weeks i bring my own lunch and secretly save the money away. does all this make me spoiled? i dont feel like i flaunt with all my money by wearing designer lables. i dress in a band shirt and jeans everyday and i dont wear any makeup besides eye makeup, i dont do anything with my hair. my biggest investment is my vinyl and cd collection.

more details
-15 years old is the age
-300 hundred dollars in cash every xmas(rich aunts and uncles on dads side who are in show business and are lawyers)
-my dad is a carpet cleaning buisness owner(working class job)
-my mom is a social worker
-live in Garden Grove, Orange County(NOT the rich part in South County, i live next to huntigton beach in north county)

-really great sounding stereo, wich includes pre-amp, 5 disc cd player, record player, and subwofer<--- which used to be my sister<----which she found on ebay
-i currently have 180 dollors in my wallet
-i love green day and buy memorabilia every chance i get
-same with the beatles
-i have depression caused by a chemical imbalance wich means meds for life(i duno if this is relevent)
-i get pretty good grades
-i fight with my mom a lot but hey im a teenager
-i dont celebrate my birthdays(parents usually forget and give me a cd or dvd when they remember)
-no HDtvs in my house, 1 HDtv in my dads house.
-i have a Russian Toy Terrier puppy that i got for 100 buck from christmas money
-the most expensive thing in my room (besides my bed) is a 7'' vinyl set of Green Day singles that was - i think - at least $130.

sorry guys if this is a lot to read, i am really bored, but interested in your opinions.
to the user "gurunvelbar" i actually do drink a lot of water. and i dont eat a lot of junk food, mainly because i wasn't raised. my dad is greek and my mom is mexican so that means a lot of home-cooked food. not saying that i dont eat junk food at all. i do have the occasional corn nut =]
*raised to
oh and the depression thing, i think it's genetic because my dad is bipolar(hes not as out of control as a lot of people think when i say that) and my brother also has a chemical imbalance. hes 21.

Answer
Well I am not a teenager but I do have 4 kids and even though you mentioned a lot of stuff. This is stuff that your parents want you to have. If your friends think you are spoiled maybe ir is becasue they are jealous of what you do have. FYI. My kids also always have enough in their purse for an outfit receive cash and goodys for various reasons. All 4 of my kids also have Lcd hanging on their walls with different gaming stations. Sometime teenage girls say mean things to each other out of jealousy and spite. Your parents have made a consious effort to ensure you have a good life. Enjoy it

I have been a stay at home mother for a little over a year now, and i really think my children are getting bored. i am a full time student, but i do not do my class work until after the children are in bed. i have 2 daughters that are 16 months and 30 months.. they would both be able to do toddler activities, as my 16 month is highly advanced ( according to her docs. bc she speaks in sentences and knows about 50-75 words and can count to 10) anyways, sorry that was a little off topic, what are some fun and educational type activities that i can do with them. i need something low budget since i dont have an income being a SAHM.

any tips would be great!

Answer
i am also a sahm and we do with my 2 year old lots of things like drawing (pens, paints, finger paints),reading tons of various literature(folk, rhymes, fairy-tales, foreign lng. books for kids of that age), developmental toys(many of which you can make youself), learning by flash-cards(i also do some of them myself),watching various pics and talking about them, watching family albums, examining maps(ordinary),playing synthesizer and some other kids musical instruments(i play for her simlpe kids songs and she hits and punches the keys too), she is even entertained when i sing karaoke songs for her, also phys. activities with balls, fit-ball, hide-&-seek, running arond the room, etc.,dvds( 1 for entertaining and 2 short developmental like for teaching counting or ABC, or foreign.lng./ per day), involving her into cooking or other running-the-home activities,we also go for a walk twice a day and visit a developmental group twice a week...

Need an age appropriate toy for 2 boy toddlers?

CrackerJac

I saw a big box of GI Joes at the dollar store but then I was thinking about the small parts and I wouldn't want my lil cousins to choke or get stabbed in the eye. So what would be some age appropriate toys?

Answer
I think that a good game to play with for a toddler is with puppets. I thought that these were hard to use but my husband recently bought some online and they were very easy to use and play with. My son he loved these puppets so much. My son convinced my husband to buy him a puppet theater and made a play for the whole family he has gotten very good with the puppets he and his friend are going to make a play next week in school too. I think it has been one of the best toys we have ever gotten my son. I leave you a link where my husband found the puppets they have a whole lot of them.

How can I get two toddler boys to share toys and play better together?

mommy06880

I currently babysit for a friend who has a two year old boy who is very laid back and calm. My son on the other hand (20 months) is super active and a little crazy. They both play pretty well together however, I am constantly having to stop the figthting over toys as soon as one picks it up the other wants it. I know I can not fully break them of this, they after all are toddlers but what can I do to help?

Answer
There are some age appropriate toys that have multiple sets of things, which they can both play with at the same time. Or a project that they both contribute to assembling...something big enough that they can work on it without getting in each other's space. May I suggest Place & Trace by Discovery Toys...a set of three separate puzzles geared to their age. Give each boy one puzzle with its 4 pieces. They can complete the puzzle, use it to cut out Play Doh, or even cut out cookie dough and bake cookies in fun dinosaur shapes or transportation or house pet (each puzzle has a different theme). Often, an open-ended toy will be played with in different ways by different kids. That's what you need to look for.

How can i say sorry . . .?

Me

Well, me and a friend are pretty close, i guess.

But, like now I'm in love with her and i told her, something complicated was going on with her ex and she was going through a rough time..

and like i guess i just rushed everything and went and told her.

i want to say sorry, nicely and i don't want her to feel weird or strange or anything like that..

I suck at english and writing so i don't know how to tell her and stuff, im writing this on myspace/email/online so yeah :)

thanks.

all help is much appreciated.

x

Answer
Saying your sorry won't unsay what you said, you have changed the dynamics of the relationship and if she does nto feel the same the best you can ever hope for is that she trys to act like you didn't tell her.

Don't apologise for saying it, it makes it sound as if you are apologise for telling her the truth, dishonesty will not help.

Instead tell her that you really care about her and the friendship you have and that you would really hate to loose her as a friend and that you wanted to tell her how you felt coz you didn't wanna keep secrets from her but that you are not expecting anything to happen.

How do I say Im Sorry?

Q. favorite teacher and close friend. I talked too much in class, got my seat changed and got detention. I feel bad. served the detention today after school but was too flustered to talk to her after. tomorrow after my class with her im planning to go up to her desk and say sorry. but how? help please. ok so I walk up to her dest and say " Mrs. Herrera..." please finish what I sould say to her. Im so lost. Thanks!

Answer
saying I'm sorry face to face is best, so no matter what you actually say it will be welcome. say "...I'm sorry I was disrespectful."

Whats the name of this wooden toy with a metal ball?

frances

Its driving me crazy! Its two metal poles that you put the ball on and pull the poles apart and try to get the ball into the farthest hole, but its very difficult. Anyone kniow what this thing is called?!?!

Answer
gravity ball game, its old and many people come up with other names but this is the clasic, get a kid to really try and there quiet for hours. no batterys, if they get mad and throw it- its fine, if they spill there drink on it- its fine, if a baby gets ahold of it- its fine...cant say that about most kids toys today

What kind of wooden toy is this?
