My first Nubian Kid(baby goat)?
Kate
Okay so I will soon be getting my first goat that will be proably 2weeks old and will be bottle fed still. Could anyone give me tips on shelter, food, bottle formula, where to purchase, how much per amount of time, how often, fencing, toys, and names?
thankss
How much would it cost to get shipped from VA to PA?
Answer
What you are asking, requires an extremely long detailed answer. but i will do my best.
Okay. 2 weeks old, is in my opinion too soon to get a kid. 4 weeks is what i do.
Please Please Please. get at least 2, unless it will be house-trained and kept in the house. They are social creatures.
Okay. shelter, it will need something it can fully stand in and turn around. For a nubian or 2. i think a 5x8 run in shed is a good start. That would be minimum. you want room for it to walk around when the weather is bad, and a place for hay, and water.
Food: at 2 weeks it won't really be eating much hay/grain, which is why i recommend waiting till it is 4 weeks. at that age it should be eating hay/grain. He/she will need to be fed whatever it is used to getting fed. such as whole cow milk, or milk replacer, a sudden change will result in loose stool and a very stressed out goat. milk replacer can be found at your local feed store, i use purina kid milk replacer.
A nubian kids feeding schedule here is : newborn-1 day: fed every 4 hours, at about 4 ounces. or however much it will take.
after day one: fed 4 times a day usually about 4-6 ounces.
2 weeks. down to 3 times a day, getting 8-10 ounces or so.
4 weeks 2 times a day getting 12-14 ounces. gradually increasing up to NO MORE than 16-18 ounces. depending on its size. The most i have ever fed was 20 ounces to a huge doe kid. and only 2 times a day. at 4 weeks it should start eating hay and grain well.
8 weeks: 16 ounces 1x a day. until its about 10 weeks. you can either wean it, or keep it on a bottle.
Fencing. it so totally depends on how much land your gonna fence. a small pen i would use chain link kennel. or a larger area cattle panels would be best. but it may be able to climb through it until it is a few months old. so beware.
toys, anything climbable with no hole for a leg to get stuck in. some goats really like basketballs/soccer balls. just make it "kid"safe.
Honestly, PA to VA is not that bad, i live on the eastern shore of MD, and i have drove as far as Maine. but my guess would be around 100-200. depending on who delivers it.
