What kind of Games did kids play in colonial America?

Abby W

Like say i was a blacksmiths child, what games would I play?

Answer
You would have played around the smithy, probably with some of the tools and equipment there. You might have had toys whittled from wood and made from scrap material that was available. Children played chasing games, just like kids today, and role playing games that prepared them for life - playing at being adults.

But your childhood would have been very short. You would have had to grow up very quickly and start contributing to family survival. Everyone, including children, had to work. You would have helped out around the smithy, carrying out any tasks you were capable of doing. You would have been considered a young adult by the time you were 10 or 11, and have been expected to take responsibility. Even before that age, chores included chopping wood, tending to livestock, gathering vegetables, picking worms off tobacco plants and dung out of fleece, hunting and butchering, prepping flax and thread for spinning, washing clothes in the iron kettle and working in the kitchen.

Even with all those responsibilities, kids did make time for play. Some forms of recreation back then would be recognizable today in both name and content, such as ice skating, kite flying, jump rope, marbles and bobbing for apples. But some familiar activities had different names, and other games have since been transformed or totally died off. These include:

â¢Quoits - Wooden or rope circlets were thrown over a post, similar to horse shoes.
â¢Draughts - Another name for checkers.
â¢Hoop and Stick - Boys would run, driving a wooden hoop (two and a half feet across) with a nine-inch stick. Two girls would use their sticks to pass the hoop between them.
â¢Skittles - Also called ninepins. One ball was used to bowl over nine pins with the goal of bowling exactly 31 pins.
â¢Witch in a Bottle - Similar to Freeze Tag.

Has your kids toys ever went off by themselves?

Q. I'm a little parnoid because the house we lived in before was haunted for those who believe me. Now were living in a apartment & this 1 particular toy(riding toy) keeps going off during the night by itself. How could this happen? AND has your kids toys ever done the same thing?

Answer
Oh yes this has happened a lot. Very creepy.

But there are a few reasons for this.

My son got a remote control air plane when he was little. It was preschool type toy and he would hold the controls like a steering wheel and drive the plane around the house.

We noticed sometimes while watching tv the airplane would make noises when no one was near it. It would beep, wheels would turn & so on. Other times the tv would flicker too or get static on it.

Turned out that the remote for the airplane and our tv remote were on the same what is it called frequency. My husband discovered this himself. He's an electronic engineer.

Another time in our old house during the middle of the night we'd hear a preschool Mr. Potato head game going off by itself. We'd hear out of the blue "Opps, I lost all my parts can you help me?" lol Drove us crazy! The toy didn't have an off button & would time out making itself go to sleep. It would go on & off by itself often. At first thought it was our dog or even our daughter sneaking out at night bumping it. But we'd put it on top of the tv stand out of reach and it would still do it!

My daughter loaned the toy to our neighbor one weekend. Late one night around 11pm our neighbor knocked on the door in his robe. He looked tired and had the game saying it would shut up. lol

Turns out it was the batteries were low. We found replacing them more often when the screen dimmed it stopped doing it.

We've had other toys too that do this. Toys that light up and play music are creepy. We had a stuffed bear that would start to play Twinkle Twinkle little star on it's own.

I do believe in haunted houses. I grew up in Columbus, MS. I saw it profile on tv a few years ago as one of the most "Haunted towns in MS." Dateline or Primetime profiled it. I grew up being one of the kids in the victorian houses for tour groups. We'd make butter, decorate a christmas tree, sew and stuff like that while tour groups walked by.

All the homes in the area were haunted. My best friend & I often changed clothes in a room where a baby had died. You would see the form of the baby on the feather bed. The maid would fix the bed before tours and sometimes while standing there changing we'd see the form appear by itself. It was a high bed so we thought maybe something was pulling on it from under it but that never happened.

I grew up in an area where part of civil war took place. Ditches were dug all through out neighborhood. They were ditches the soldiers would hid behind while they fought against the north. Plus many indians died in the area too. We had a famous trial near us & as you walked through the woods trees marked in red paint were where indians had been buried. Very creep.

My 14yr old says we have ghosts in the house. We have an old piano from the mid 1800s. My daughter says she often sees a little girl around 10 sitting near it at night. The idea scares me to death. lol

I've often smelled and felt my grandfather's presence. I smell Old Spice & Peppermints.

Now I don't believe ghost can move things or touch things. Ghosts are mentioned in the bible after Jesus dies and he is seen in ghost form. http://www.jesusreligion.com/ghosts_bible.html Ghosts are more the spirit that moves our human body. We pass easily from Heaven to Earth.

My brother in law is a Baptist pastor and we've often spoke on this subject.

Demons are the ones who attack, move things and throw things. Demons, I believe are after the spirits who belong to God. Demons can trap the spirits. Demons also want to attack us and use us to attack others.

you can't believe in the good with out believing in the bad

Edit - "I do believe in ghosts but they don't play with little kid toys, that's just silly. " - very true. It is more the engery not ghosts can't touch things but their energy can.

I watched a tv show that showed a demonologist talking to a ghost child who was trapped by a demon. They tested the power of the little girl to make sure she wasn't a demon. she was asked to turn and move the flashlight which she didn't. Then she was asked dim it which she did.

Need an age appropriate toy for 2 boy toddlers?

CrackerJac

I saw a big box of GI Joes at the dollar store but then I was thinking about the small parts and I wouldn't want my lil cousins to choke or get stabbed in the eye. So what would be some age appropriate toys?
4 minutes ago - 3 days left to answer.

Answer
I think that a good game to play with for a toddler is with puppets. I thought that these were hard to use but my husband recently bought some online and they were very easy to use and play with. My son he loved these puppets so much. My son convinced my husband to buy him a puppet theater and made a play for the whole family he has gotten very good with the puppets he and his friend are going to make a play next week in school too. I think it has been one of the best toys we have ever gotten my son. I leave you a link where my husband found the puppets they have a whole lot of them.

How do you organize your toddlers toys?

Dani

I have 2 toddler girls; 4 and 2 and not sure how I should organize their toys. I have been using empty diaper boxes for their toys (hey! they come in handy, haha) and I just throw everything in there.. big toys, small toys, parts to other toys. For the past few days I've been rearranging their room and want to organize their toys better. Where do you put big toys like for example a leap frog pad or anything of that size? How do you keep certain toys together like all blocks together, play doh, or whatever else like that?

My daughter's don't have a book shelf or any shelf in their room so I can't use anything like that. There are 2 dressers that would be free to put anything on top.

Come on guys, I really need some help lol I'm having brain farts! LOL Thanks

Answer
We're fortunate enough to have an extra bedroom that we've converted into a play room for the time being, so we have a whole room set just for my boys toys. I'm a bit of a neat freak and like to keep things organized. When we moved into our house I bought these big organizers from The Container Store and sorted each by size, what type of toy they were, etc. We bought two of the organizers-one for each of my boys. We also have other bins and a big chest that we've collected over the years to hold their things. All of it has certainly come in handy-and it manages to keep the playroom semi clean(most of the time!) :)

Toddler Education...?

Tiffany

I am sorta in the dark when it comes to what exactly I need to be doing to help better my soon to be 4 year olds learning skills... such as numbers, letters, ect.
What kind of activities should I do?
What should I be focusing on?
What materials.... like workbooks, toys, ect. will help?
What games?
Just some advice...
Give me specifics! What did/ are you using w/ your toddler!
Thanks in advance...

Answer
Baby Einstein flash cards are great...or other type of flash cards- as long as your child enjoys them
Do whatever interests your child!
Read to them alot!
Leap frog or Vtech products are great.
Learning through play is the best for young children!
I would stear clear of any workbooks
Don't worry, your child will learn everything in kindergarten, so there's no reason to teach everything now- he'll be bored in school.

One activity my son loves is we write with chalk outside(letters, numbers, shapes) and then I ask him where a particular letter or number or shape is and he'll go stand on it. He just turned 3!!! He really loved flash cards, that's how he learned all his letters, numbers, shapes, and colors. Praise every little thing he learns, and he'll want to hear more and more from you. Good luck!!!

Is there a Virtual Online game of DisneyWorld?

Corinne

Like one that you can talk with people, explore, and just you know hang out? PLZ TELL ME IF U KNOW!!!

Answer
There used to be a game named VMK(Virtual Magic Kingdom), but it closed down.
A fan-made game derived from VMK called VFK(Virtual Family Kingdom). It's very similar to VMK, but the graphics is highly different, from an advanced looking 2-D to a primitive looking 3-D.

Disneyworld with Grandma?

Kathleen

I am taking my Grandson to Disneyworld in Aug. He is 6 and I only have 3 days to do everything. I want him to have a wonderful time because his home life is pretty bad. Where should I start? What are the favorite things for 6 yr. olds? We are staying at Disneyworld and there is a bus to the park. I can get around well. Moms & Dads please reply....

Best regards, Grandma

Answer
We took my daughters (5 and 1 at the time) to Disneyworld a couple of years ago. I would definitely recommend the kids park in Magic Kingdom, they loved it and we spent most of our time there.
I would avoid Epcot, it's not really for younger children. They do have a neat center that the kids did enjoy with video games and stuff, but it wasn't worth spending a whole day.
Animal Kingdom is fun. They have a lot of things for kids to do, including a dinosaur kiddie park with kiddie rides.
MGM rides are better for adults, but they have a ton of meet and greets for the kids to meet the characters. They also have playhouse Disney live with Bear In the Big Blue House, and Winnie the Pooh. I think that was a favorite for us.

So definitely don't miss Magic Kingdom. And if he likes Playhouse Disney, go to MGM.
