Best toys for 7 to 9 month old boy?

Roland'sMo

Any suggestions on good educational toys? Things to promote learning, crawling, walking, etc?
Thanks in advance!

Answer
I think the best toys for that age is activity tables. They can pull up on them and stand and walk around them to do the activities that the table has on top.

Toys & games for a 6 month old boy?

amys728

I have a six month old son. He is a really happy baby. He's always smiles & laughs & all you really gotta do is barely look at him & say hi. He also loves to just stare & look around. Especially if we're outside or in a new place. He gets so fixated, observant & pays attention so much on everything going on around him. He is so good when I take him out in public b/c of this. I was wondering if anyone can suggest any good toys or games I can play with him that will help him developmentally? I just want to give him as much stimulation and enrichment as possible. He really likes to play w/ toys. But I just have really simple, non-learning type of toys right now, don't know what to buy. We talk to him constantly. I heard that helps. We've talked to him since he was born, like when we change him, feed him etc. Sometimes it's in baby talk & sometimes it's normal talk.

To sum it up, what toys are good for a 6 month old boy developmentally? Are there any games I can play with him to stimulate & enrich him?

Also, has anyone used the Baby Eistein DVDs? Do you think they really do any good or are they just hype? My son actually does like to watch t.v. alot, especially cartoon shows.

Answer

What are the best learning toys for children?

Koozie

I have a 9 mo old daughter and a 2 year old son who isn't speaking yet. He has poor cognitive skills due to having crossed eyes since birth and has had surgeries to correct them and still more to come. He will be seeing a speech and child development therapist next month. Each having different abilities, my daughter is showing signs of catching on earlier than my son did, yet that may be cause her eyes are not crossed. I was just wondering, what are the best learning toys out there that are the appropriate age for my two children?
I didn't say his speaking has anything to do with his eyes, yet his dr said it might, seeing how he couldn't even see our face to watch us say the words we've been trying to teach him. Got him evaluated by SoonerStart and he is at the learning level of an 11 mo old so anything we do or try could help. He does have the house one of you mentioned. He has tons of toys, just doesn't seem interested in most. Dr said he just may not see them that well. Is more interested in trucks and things with wheels. Won't let me read to him because he can't see the pictures, or at least shows no interest in them. Thanks though for all your answers.

Answer
Visual impairments may contribute to speech delays, but usually they are severe impairments. The doctors would know best on that one. As one person wrote, the old fashioned toys are best. Blocks are open ended and inspire a child's imagination. My son, who also has a speech delay and one eye that wonders in (and will need surgery), his wooden train set is his favorite. I have a blog reviewing natural, developmentally appropriate toys:
http://www.ecochildsplay.com
Reading to your child is the most important thing you can do. Keep reading, even if he doesn't show interest. You can read to him while he plays. Telling him stories is a great activity too, that may lead to books. Also, talk to him all the time! Speak constantly about what you are doing so that he hears language and can build his receptive vocabulary. How is his hearing? Good luck with your little ones!

What are the best learning toys for babies?

I have a 2 month old baby. There are so many learning toys out there that I would like to know which are the best for him.

Answer
A good playmat is a wonderful thing. There are a lot of them out there.

Books are always a good idea. You will love it when he gets a little older and starts to look at the pictures with you.

There are two things that my son has that he loves and they are great learning toys for him as well.

The first is penguin bowling. Each penguin has a number. Right now at 6 months old, we just call the penguin by the number and he uses them as stuffed animals.

The second is the Vtech Explore and Learn Helicopter. The parenting magazine that I get had it on their list of best toys for the year as well. It has numbers, music, a mini piano, animal sounds. 2 months might be a little early for it unattended. It is recommended for a year and up, but it has a lot of great things there.

I need an alternative to cake for a toddler's 2 year birthday?

Stephanie

My son isnt a "sweets" kinda kid. He enjoys all kinds of fruit however. I have seen how you can carve a basket out of a watermelon and think something similar would be a cute alternative like a car or truck or something "boyish". Any ideas how to do it websites would be great! Thanks!

Answer
Listen to Christopher! It does take alot of time and practive to do crafty carvings! Your two year old wont remember the time and effort you put into such crafting. If you are having a party, why dont you have cake anyway, however, add his favorite fruit somehow in a creative manner. For some kids, it is all about the presentation! He will be too busy with his guests and toys to worry about anything else! Try the following website for some kid friendly ideas! Good luck! (I just went through a two year old birthday myself, and chose the easy route of ordering a cake from the nearest bakery! She didnt eat cake, but she enjoyed blowing out the candles and picking the Minnie Mouse toy toppings off of the cake!)

Answer
Hello!

I am a huge fan of Disney World and have all of the books and merchandise so I thought I'd leave you a comment and see if I can help at all. I am 17, and have been to Disney World about 6 times and loved it all ages, I first went when I was 6 so I can sort of relate to your children's ages.

I'll go through each park and let you know what I feel is appropriate place / thing to do for a 4 and 5 year old, hopefully I will be of some help.

Magic Kingdom:
Donald's Boat = A water play area,
Mickey and Minnie's Houses = Great to explore, real houses with lots of hidden secrets,
Barnstormer = A young children's rollercoaster,
Jungle Cruise = A river boat with lots of audio-animatronic animals,
Pirates of the Caribbean = Is a maybe, as there is quite a large drop.
The enchanted tiki room = Audio-animatronic bord show,
Country bear jamboree = An audio-animatronic musical show with bears,
Tom Sawer Island = A huge play area kind of place with lots of room to explore,
Haunted Mansion = I went on it at 6 and found it hilarious! But some bits are a little spooky,
Liberty Belle Riverboat = Relaxing cruise
Main Street Vehicles = Can ride a fire engine, a tram, a horse and cart right up to the castle,
Cinderella's golden carousel = Pretty self explanatory
Mickey's Philharmagic = A 3D musical show with all disney characters,
Dumbo = Elephants which the kids can control to go up or down,
Peter Pan's Flight = An indoor ride in pirate ships that goes around Neverland,
It's a Small World = An indoor cruise around the world with lots of little singing dolls,
Mad Tea Party = Alice in Wonderland themed tea cup ride
Snow White's Scary Adventures = Is a maybe, as the witch scenes are dark and could be scary.
Winnie the Pooh = Definitely!!! Kids will love it, ride in a hunny pot around the 100 acre wood,
Tomorrowland Indy Speedway = Drive cars around a track
Carousel of Progress = A moving theatre that takes you into the past and future of technology,
Monsters Inc Laugh Floor = An interactive comedy kids show where they can talk to you,
Buzz Lightyear = A space ranger shooting game through Zurg's Planet,

EPCOT-
Journey into Imagination = A cute ride into the 5 senses with a purple character named figment,
The seas with nemo and friends = Climb into a shell and meet nemo and friends,
Spaceship earth = A ride through the life of communication,
Honey I shrunk the audience = A 3d interactive show,
Grand fiesta tour with three caballeros = A boat ride to find donald duck as he's lost in mexico,
Universe of energy = a moving theatre, but it's very ong and they may get bored...
Soarin' = lifted up into the air and put in front of a cinema screen,
Living with the land = boat ride through epcots greenhouses,
Turtle talk with crush = let your kids talk to crush the turtle from finding nemo

Hollywood Studios -
The Great Movie Ride = Go through some of the most famous movies including mary poppins and wizard of oz,
Beauty and the beast live = A musical show,
MuppetVision 3D = A 3D movie experience, FANTASTIC!
Honey I shrunk the kids movie set = Playground where everything is HUGE!
Backlot tour = Look behind the scenes at props,
Toy Story Midway Mania = Play 3D shoot out games while on a ride,
Journey into Narnia = Walk into narnia through a wardrobe,
Voyage of the little mermaid = A little mermaid show,
Playhouse disney = Live stage show usually either handy manny, bear in the bug blue houe, little einsteins, my friends tigger and pooh or mickey mouse clubhouse.
High School Musical Pep Rally = Live dance/singing show

Animal Kingdom -
Finding Nemo Show = A musical with huge puppets,
Kilimanjaro Safaris = A safari ride with real animals,
It's tough to be a bug = A 3D show with Flik from a bug's life, some bits may shock them as they touch seats etc.
Festival of the Lion King = A lion king themed show,
Pangani forest = A trail through forest to see hippos, birds and fish,
Wildlife express train = A train ride to see behind the scenes animal enclosures,
Affection section = Petting zoo,
Flights of wonder = Bird show,
The Boneyard = Play area where they can dig up dinosaur bones,
TriceraTop Spin = A dumbo-like ride with dinosaurs

So there you have it, those are the rides that I would deem appropriate for your girls.
Don't forget they can also meet lots of characters at each park, there are also night-time fireworks, shows and day-time parades for them to see.
There are lots of little hidden extras that will surprise them along the way too.

As well there is Downtown Disney full of shops that will entertain them; such as the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique where your little girls can get dressed up as princesses, have their hair and make-up done too. There is Once upon a toy, which is a HUGE toy shop. And also a lego store which has lots of lego sculptures inside and outside.

Also the monorail is exciting for kids as they can see Cinderella's Castle in the distance.

my two year old ?

user

i want advice from all parents out there my two year old has become very strong willed and i know that is good some how but im afraid he can injury himself because he is in what ius call the terrible two if you said dont do that he will do it. he has become defiant. he also has starting hitting when we dont let him do what he wants so what im doing is if he hit i put him on time out a minute by year of life like i read but he still doing it he is jumping up and down in the couch he is having also temper tamtrums i love my child to death its just that i want the best for him i want to know what else can i do to help him go troughout this fase thanks in advance and please i don't believe in spanking so dont suggest it
thank you all

Answer
My 4 year old has been that way since she started breathing!!!! She is very stuborn and defiant! I have noticed when she starts up. Pay attention to what time of the day your son starts acting up the most. It might be that he is tired and fighting it. It is also a good Idea not to let him have sugar if he is hyper already. That goes for koolaid also! I buy crystal light(no sugar) but still taste good.

Also pay attention if he is bored. My daughter goes nuts running and jumping and is the worst when she is bored. She needs alot of 1 on 1 time doing something. Take him for a walk when he is jumping around and hyper, the fresh air tires them out and he can get that energy out. Even if it's cold outside. Fresh air is always the best! Just make it a short walk.

Spankings do not work for my daughter. Time outs would only work if I were to sit on her the hole time! lol- So her punishment is to take things away that she loves. Her special blanket gets taken away for 30 mins if she does not stop jumping on the couch. She will scream and cry for the hole 30 mins and I will not let her have it back until she stops and sits without crying for at least 5 mins after the 30. If I give in because she won't stop crying for it,it just tells her that if she cries long enough she will get it back. He is stong willed and you need to be stronger. With the hitting thing.. With both my kids, right from the start, If they hit me,I would hit them back. Not hard... but hard enough that they knew they did not like it. Like a little slap in the same spot that they hit you in. Same with biting, if they would bite me I would bite them back..again,not hard enough to hurt them but hard enough that they did not like it. At the same time I would tell them "see, thats not nice to hit,do you like it if I hit you?" Of corse they don't like it,but it shows them how it feels to someone else on the other side. If you think back to your childhood you might remember being called mean names by other kids and it might have hurt your feelings so thats why you don't call people names as you know how it feels. It's all a part of learning and every child learns differently.

You will just have to try everything you can think of and see what works best.

One more thing, I know all the doctors and health aids and teachers and everyone else says spankings are bad. But you know there is a line between a spanking and a beating. There is a difference between a slap and a hit...I was driving with my daughter in her car seat. (age 4) She wanted a gatoraide from the gas station and I had no money and I told her that I would get her something when we got home. Just as we were passing the Gas station she started screming at the top of her lungs and she threw a toy at me and hit me in the face! Then the toy fell on the floor by my feet. She seen the toy fall and wanted it back and I said NO! She then undid her seat belt and tried climing into the front seat as I was driving!!!! I pulled over in the gas station parking lot and jumped out to run around the car and get her back into her seat, she then jumped out my drivers door and started running towards the gas station!! She almost got hit by a car that was turning in!!!! I grabed her..pulled her pants down and gave her 1 good spank right there! She was embarassed and has never taken off her seat belt again in the car. What would a time out do in a time like that? Yes someone could have called the cops and said I hit my child but so what! She knew right from wrong as far as the seat belt and rules in the car go.And she learned a lesson. I talked to her after we got home and explained why she can't do that. Told her she could have gotton hurt. And I love her and thats why she can't take that belt off. Like I said all children are different and all cirumstances are different. I am sure you will figure out the what works best for your child and it will get better. Even try setting up a time for him to play with other kids would be great. I took my daughter to day care 2 days a week for 4 hours when she was 2 and 3 just so she could play with other kids and I could have time to get errands done. It helps!!! Good Luck.

What are some good learning toys for a 2 year old boy?

Melissa L

Answer
Do not buy expensive toys, because at two years old a child is not really able to learn much at all.

A plastic bucket or box with a lot of bits and pieces that would fascinate curiosity is good .

A bundle of firewood was most interesting when I was crawling. Why?. I was too young to know the answer to that but a toy will always remain a toy.

What are the earlest tv shows you remember watching?

Just Askin

So many programs have come and gone around the world.

BQ1 What country do you live in?

BQ2 Have you ever been on television? Or in a movie?

Answer
Gulla Gulla Island - SCARRED ME! That yellow thing is freaky!
Rollie Pollie Ollie - I thought it was inanely boring even then.
House of Mouse - I liked it, it had cartoons and Disney.
The Weekenders - saw it at some point, it got canceled but I really liked it.
Seseme Street - not an avid watcher, but who hasn't seen this?
Dora the Explorer - sadly, this was more helpful for learning Spanish than anything.
Flintstones - Only sometimes, but I kind of thought it was bland. And Gazoo ANNOYED me.
Animaniacs - Still continues to be one of my favorites, I love the adult jokes I can now get.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - I liked the idea of Asian fighting styles, fun inplausability, and wisecracking jokers as the heroes wrapped up in one show. I'm still a Turtle girl, and even though I think it's a lot more corny now I love it.

Darkwing Duck - Disney's blend of wisecracking superheroes, trademark animals, and actually threatening villains (for the most part) with weapons and guns instead of dumb things. Sure, it had some dumb episodes, and the animation ranged from really good to choppy. But I still like it today, and that must mean something.

BQ2: No.

How did Los Angeles get its name?

Garrett La

How did Los Angeles get it's name? The angles?

Answer
It's a long story, but I'll try to shorten it.

First off, Los Angeles means "The Angels" in Spanish.

There is more to it than "Los Angeles." A Franciscan priest by the name of Father Juan Crespi founded a river in the area and gave it the name "Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de la Porciúncula" (Our Lady the Queen of Angels of the Little Portion) now known today as the LA River.

Fast forward to September 4, 1781, a new settlement was established along that river. The settlement came to be known as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciúncula or "The Town of Our Lady the Queen of Angels of the Little Portion." But you can call it Los Angeles.

(Sorry. Animaniacs reference.)

Best pocket bike for kids?

Asia D

I want to purchase a pocket bike, mini dirt bike, or mini quad for my nephew's graduation present. He is 6 years old, about 60 lbs, average Height. I want to know the best thing to get him, if there are any with speed lock-outs or remote shut offs. A few good name brands would be awesome. I also need something I can get training wheels for. I'm looking to spend no more than 500. Please no comments about how he doesn't need one or that he needs to be supervised he is well taken care and we understand this isn't a toy. I just need advice on what to buy. Thank you!

Answer
Pocket bikes are Chinese made knock off's/clones of Japanese and European bikes. They are inferior to the bike they are cloned from. They do not have the reliability, dependability, quality or craftsmanship of the bikes they are cloned from.

With that said, I would recommend you look into a Japanese or European bike. He will fit on a 50cc to a 65cc bike. Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and KTM all make mini-bikes.

Since you do not have a lot to spend, you will have to look used. Check Ebay, Craigslist, CycleTrader and BikeFinds.

If you go with a used older bike, Honda used to make a MR 50 2-stroke and an XR75 4-stroke. The XR75 is built like iron and will last for your nephew's children.

The Yamaha PW50 has a restrictor that can be removed.

When it comes to training wheels, just Google mini-bike training wheels. There are a lot of different ones out there. Example: http://gokartsusa.com/EZ-Bike-Mini-Motorcycle-Training-Wheels.aspx
Training wheels are not cheap, they cost around $150. You can also look for used training wheels on Ebay and Craigslist.

If your nephew can ride a bicycle, he will be able to ride a dirt bike. I am not a fan of quads. When I taught my children to ride, I also let them ride my buddies quads. They all preferred dirt bikes to quads. Quads are super easy to learn to ride, but are very easy to tip over and if they do not keep their feet on the pegs can get run over by their own machine. Quads are also heavier than dirt bikes and if the child flips the quad, they may not be able to get our from underneath it without help.

This is the motorcycle racing section, so we mainly only recommend racing machines, but since he is just starting out a true mini-bike from say Sears or Pep Boys might fit the bill fine. These mini-bikes brand new cost under $400. Have large 4-stroke lawn mower engines on them and are perfect for trail riding and basic transportation. If your nephew likes riding though, he will outgrow the mini-bike within a summer.

Don't forget riding gear. Helmet, goggles and a pair of riding boots. Goggles, gloves, shoulder pads with chest protector, kidney belt, armored riding pants and racing jersey can come later. You can find used gear at Ebay, Craigslist, garage sales and flea markets. Does he need the protective gear for a mini-bike? Probably not, but a helmet and goggles are the minimum he should have.

If he ever needs tips on riding or maintenance, tell him to check Youtube. The amount of information on there is unbelievable. He can learn everything from fixing a flat to rebuilding an engine.

Be honest....Do you make your kid wear a helmet every time they ride their bike?

Mrs. Doe

I didn't even know what a helmet was when I was young, but I do agree they are safer than not wearing one. We went to toys r us and got my son a tricycle way back at xmas and they were trying to tell me I needed to buy a helmet for my son? He has been riding since then with no helmet, but idk... do you make your child wear one to ride a bike? My son is almost 2 and I don't make him wear one when riding his trike but I'm not sure yet if I will make him wear one when he is older.

Answer
yes my kids wear a helmet every time they ride a bike or a skateboard. I can't think of one good reason for to NOT wear one. Fact is it's safer so why would I take a risk like that?

My husband was hit by a car while riding his bike an old back road (a 16 yr old girl who just got her license hit him) when he was 15. He almost died and was in a coma for a couple weeks. He now has a metal plate in his head and had to relearn stuff. If he had a helmet on, his injuries would not have been as bad. Because my husband has actually been through an accident like this, we can't imagine sending them out to ride their bikes without one and honestly, they don't mind wearing it. If the rule is helmet or no riding from the start then it just becomes automatic for them rather than a battle each time.

EDIT: I don't understand the whole "we survived without them" thoughts. They didn't always have seat belts but that doesn't mean you don't buckle up your child. I guess people just never think anything bad will happen to them or their children....it happens.

I can understand if you just don't think a helmet is needed but to thumb people down because they take safety precautions with their kids...that's just ridiculous.

EDIT2: Jane Doe are you a male or female? Just curious because your profile says you are a male but I always thought you were a female because of your username.

Good toys for a 2 year old boy and a 5 year old girl?

Hello everyone, im going to visit some of my relatives in the summer, like i do almost every year, one of them beeing my uncle, he has two boys, aged 4 and 5, and every time i go to see them, i buy some toys as gift for them, but they always manage to break them within a months time, so is there anything you guys would recommend?

Answer
i'd probably go for lego's but many boys that age already have them but if not definitely go for lego's or those tools that are made out of plastic because its almost impossible to break those.

My son will be two at the end of January. I am thinking about getting him a toy kitchen for Christmas or his birthday. I might decide to wait until after christmas and get it on sale for his 2nd birthday! Anyways, which kitchen do you find best for a two year old BOY. I know a lot of them look more girly....but I think my son will enjoy it too. A link to the ones you own would be great....or I'd like to hear why you don't like one.

Thanks in advance!

Answer
We have boy/girl twins and have been looking at a few for Christmas - here are the ones that we are considering - we don't have a ton of space so we are looking for smaller and more affordable ones - they are also not too girly in color and style - the first one is probably the one we are going with:

If money and space were not an issue - I would go with this - ridiculously expensive but really cute:

Mickey Mouse Party?

jenzerbi

We have lots of family & friends, My son is turning 1 and the guest list is about 100 people adult & children incuded. We are going to this huge park by the lake. I just need ideas. I've never thrown a party before. If your going to say negative things bring it. LOL I know he is only turning one. But this is our only son. No more kids for us because of other reasons. And we have lots of family and close friends.

Anyways we plan on having hamburgers & cake How can I decorate with Mickey mouse things w/out spending tons of money?

Also need party favor ideas

Answer
I think the first birthday should be a big deal and should be celebrated, there's NO reason why anyone should knock you. This is YOUR son to do what YOU want, and if anyone does say something to you, tell them that being you're not taking anyone's money, you own them NO explanation to what you do.

Anyway, I LOVE this theme! You can do either Mickey plates and cups and things, etc, and go to the party store and get those things, or decorate in the colors of Mickey which are the black, white, and red. You can get balloons in those colors and cluster them around the area, streamers in those colors, plates and cups, tableclothes, etc.

Make sure you get forks, spoons, knives, napkins, etc. Condiments like ketchup, salt, and pepper, and plenty of drinks!

You can cut out black pieces of paper in big and small circles to represent Mickey's head and ears and put them around on the party area. In a park it will be harder because you don't have walls and things to hang them on, but you can put it on the tablecloth and use the balloons to decorate with. Balloons are all you really need to decorate with that say festive and party! You can cluster the black, white, and red balloons around the party area and that will really make it into a party area!

For party favors, there's lots of things you can do that are very cost effective. Go to the dollar store and get:
Bubbles
Stickers
Sidewalk chalk
Crayons and little coloring books
Some candy (no chocolate, it will melt)
little sunglasses
pencils with their names on it (I've seen them at mine)
Little keychains
Little toy balls
yoyos
fake tattoos (for the older toddlers and kids)

You can wander around there and find tons of things! Once you get there you'll see tons of things, little kids love the little trinkets and toys they have there, it's like a treasure trove for them there.

If you want some games for the kids, you can do:
Pin the ears on Mickey (print out a picture of Mickey and have it enlarged. Then print out another one and cut the ears out and make copies of them, enough for each child to get an ear). Same as pin the tail on the donkey the child that gets the closest, wins!

Duck, duck, goose.

musical Mickey! You can pass around a stuffed mickey mouse while the music plays and the person that's holding him when the music stops is out. The last person there at the end of the game, wins!

You can do a find Mickey treasure hunt. Get a mickey doll and hide it somewhere in the park. Make it one that is not cuddled and you can easily wash in the wash machine or rinse off. Make up some clues and have the older kids help the younger ones find Mickey! You can even put Mickey in a box or bag and the winner can keep Mickey! Get a little beanie stuffed Mickey at the dollar store and whoever finds Mickey gets to get keep him!

I hope some of these ideas help, and that some of the decorations help. Just go with the Mickey colors and pictures of him, or see what the party stores have. You can even just cut out black circles and have them all around the area.

I hope these help and that your son has a great party and a very Happy 1st Birthday!!

WHERE CAN I FIND MICKEY MOUSE FURNITURE?

TiNuH

I AM NOT LOOKING FOR BEDDING, I AM LOOKING FOR A BED, DRESSER, ETC. I NEED A TODDLER BED. IF YOU FIND ANYTHING THAT CAN BE USEFUL/HELPFUL PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THANK YOU!

Answer
I don't think they make Mickey Mouse beds and dressers, per se, but that doesn't mean you have to go without. I'd like to suggest a REALLY EASY DIY project to get what you are after. Even if you don't have construction skills, you can still make something to fit your needs. For example:

BED - Go to your local big box home improvement chain and purchase a sheet of MDF board. If you have a saw and can handle the cuts, cut out 2 circles. One, very large to cover the width plus overhang of your bed. Then cut a smaller circle in half (to resemble the ears). You can attached these with simple brackets to make the basic shape of Mickey's head. Paint it black, mount on wall and use as a head board. If you don't have a saw or cutting skills, you can purchase unfinished round table tops. The big box store should be willing to cut the smaller table round in half for you. Again, join with brackets, paint black, and mount.

DRESSER - Purchase an inexpensive dresser and paint it black. Above the dresser, mount a mirror that you've made, again with round pieces of wood in the fashion described above for the bed. Attach a round mirror in the center of Mickey's face (there are specialty adhesives and clamps for attaching mirrors), and you have a custom made Mickey Dresser. (IF you like you can embellish the dresser with Mickey Mouse stickers.)

Don't forget to add Mickey Mouse drawer pulls/knobs. Here are some from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Mickey-Mouse-Knobs-Set-10/dp/B003XLV1V0

Or, for a more sophisticated look, try theses knobs:

http://cgi.ebay.com/D-05s-Mickey-Mouse-Cabinet-Door-Metal-Knobs-/110579923406?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19bf13b9ce

or:

http://cgi.ebay.com/D-06g-Mickey-Mouse-Cabinet-Door-Metal-Knobs-/110580289611?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19bf19504b

Finally, accessorize with Mickey merchandise. You can buy lamps, wallpaper border, switch plates, etc. You can even add a small child sized table and chair set, if so inclined:

http://www.amazon.com/Kids-Only-Mickey-Clubhouse-Funtime/dp/B0039ISQTW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1283442304&sr=8-1

Have fun. This can be really easy and not super expensive plus, if you make it yourself, it will be one of a kind.

BEDDING - Buy Mickey Mouse bedding (available everywhere from Target, Toys R Us, Amazon, etc)

How can I sign up to get toys for my kids at christmas?

Amberly

I am currently unemployed, and this is my first christmas as a mom. I barely get enough for rent and bills, luckily I get WIC, but I want to get winter clothes, baby blankets and a couple toys for my 9 month old twins for christmas. anyone know of any programs or ways I can accomplish this??

Answer
omgosh hunny I know exactly how you feel. Being an unemployed mum is NEVER easy, you're always worrying about how to afford the basic things you need for your children, and Christmas is that much harder. Go to your local community centre, they will have a list of places to call for help. They will be able to help you with clothes, toys and food for your kids for Christmas.

Next year, why not try going to the dollar store each time you get paid, and buying 1 single toy ($2 or less). Put it in a box in the back of your cupboard where your kids can't reach them. Come Christmas time you'll have a nice selection of toys for your children.

Chin up love, you're not alone in this.

Giving the kids used toys for christmas?

blah

We are having really hard money problems. We have 3 kids (2 year old boy, 7 YO girl, and 11 YO boy). We will buy them all 1 new present each and a few used items. Is that a bad idea?

Answer
That's a good idea! It has a lower impact on the environment and that's great! Your kids won't even notice.
Merry Christmas!

how are talking cats able to pronounce the o and u sounds?

henri r

it doesnt seem like they should be able to form those sounds, the way their mouths are shaped.

Answer
talking cats? like on ripleys believe it or not?
either way.. i found this..

Now the other animals, like the cat that you asked.
Think about the parrot, it talks? Maybe we can say
yes, if we teach a parrot (or similar bird) he will
say
words and even phrases. Does it understand the meaning
of the words he "talks" or we talk to it?
People that lives with them, or study them say that
it understands simple things related to its life.
As far as talking in a similar way to men, parrots
and similar birds are the only ones that can imitate
the pronounciation of some words.
Other birds sing and some sing very beautifully. Many
learn different melodies.
And communication?
Surely the animals can communicate and do so in
different ways. Some bees, or ants and other insects
communicate by odors or scents.
Almost every kind of animal expels sounds to
communicate with others. Even the dolphins and whales.
And the cat? Or the dog?
They dont have voices the way we have, still they
communicate between themselves and between us.
Barking and meowing have many different sounds
that differ following if dogs or cats wish to transmit
joy, sadness, fear, angry and other emotions.
These (and other) animals are still poorly studied,
but we know that the sounds (or voices)
mostly communicate emotions. They do that with sounds
and some gesture of its bodies. For example for the
cat i can
give you a "vocabulary" (common to all cats born
any place):
moving the tail: depending the speed, means fear or/
anger;
licking the lips with the tongue: i am hungry!
spanking a little one (kitty) with a paw: go away!
closing the eyes very slowly in front of you: i
love you! (you can answer the same way)
purring: it the universal way of happiness and love
(mostly the times)
and so on...

but on your question.. dunno..

Talking cat?

Katie V

I've got a 1-year-old neutered male cat that "talks" at various times of day. I know some cats howl, but this is really more like talking. For instance, if his "sister" cat doesn't want to play with him, he'll vocalize quite loudly a 'mow-wah-worw-mow-mahw' which will sound, for all the world, like a toddler. This is often accompanied by a crazed, sprinted circuit around our house. We often go to him to give him a bit of attention, but during these 'episodes' he often perches up too high for us to reach and continues to talk. Most of the time he is the most loving, cuddly cat- it's just that every now and then he goes a bit odd. Does anyone know why they do this, and what can be done to curb this behaviour?
I don't believe he has any Siamese or Persian in him (though I'm not sure- he's a rescue cat and very characteristically DSH), and he is quiet normally most of the time. I don't really feel a need to change his behaviour, I more want to understand it and try to alleviate any discomfort he feels that may cause these vocalizations. At first I wondered if it might be toileting-related, but it doesn't seem to be related. Thanks for all of your input so far!

Answer
Cats will be cats...and not one is the same. Almost every cat has some strange behavior it posesses. Want examples?... My best friend has 6 cats...Kit-Kat meows randomly and looks like a bobble-head when you scratch her back. Newbie drinks out of the faucet and runs nonstop around the whole entire house until someone notices him. Oreo will sit in a different place every two minutes and STARE at you..and at night if you let him in the room with you, you're hair will be soaked in the morning! Hobbs will rub up on anything...but I'm pretty sure he's gotta have some brain damage, because he'll smack his head on walls pretty hard when he's trying to rub against it...it's weird. Merlin weirds me out..he'll nibble on you...it's not like chewing, or playing, or biting...it's like he's sucking on you.....he's a creeper....then there's Pepper, your average cat. Meows, rolls around on the carpet, rubs on you for attention, crawls up in your lap...etc. Cats are all really weird to me, but I love them!

what will i need for a baby?

Cassandra

i have asked this before but i keep getting only a couple answers, what will i need for a baby what did some of you get that you didnt need to get and do i need a crib or can i just use a pack'n'play? what kind of diapers, formula, wipes, baby food is better, did anybody get stuff at garage/rummage sales?!?! thanks:):)

Answer
Here is a list of the stuff that I used every day with my son:
-baby bath tub/bath soap/baby towel's
-diaper bag
-bottles and a bottle drying rack
-pack n' play
-crib
-clothes (sometimes i change his clothes several times a day)
-swaddling blankets
-crib sheets (had to change those a lot too)
-boppy pillow- http://www.boppy.com/ ( this thing is so awesome!!)
- diapers/wipes/rash cream
-baby hat
-hand mits (keeps thej from scratching themselves)
-baby oil
-binki and extra binki's(for the first two months)
-gily water for colic
-walker
-toy's such as a mirror and mobile for stimulation and teething toys and a toy mat
-baby monitor
-diaper genii pale (cuts down on all those smelly diapers ten fold as opposed to tossing them in your trash can.
-high chair
- baby car seat
-toddler front facing car seat (my son is 2 now)
-large stroller

As far as the crib dilemma you have, no you don't "need" a crib, but it's a good thing to have. For the first 4 months I used my son's pack n' play as his bed becuase he wouldn't sleep through the night and it was much easier to have him next to my bed when I got up. When he was 4 months old he started sleeping through the night, at which point I put him in his crib in his bedroom. I set up a baby monitor so I can hear him. The crib I bought is a transitional, meaning it starts off as just a crib, but you can turn it into a toddler bed and then when your child is 4 or five it transitions into a full-size bed that you can buy a mattress for. I liked this idea a lot becuase this bed will be with him for life. If you do not have to do this, but it's a nice investment. The pack n' play I got also doubles as a diaper changing station and it converts from a baby bassinet to a play pen, so at this point I turned it into a play pen which was nice. I highly recommend buying convertible furniture, it;s worth it. If you don't get a crib then at the very least you need a pack n' play.
Also, when you buy diapers before you have your baby I suggest investing in only a few packs of newborn diapers becuase they only go up to 9lbs. My son was too big for them when he was born so he was in size ones from the get go. If you have a 9lb baby get size ones. As far as sizing goes the same rule goes for clothing too. Don't get a ton of newborn outfits becuase I can guarantee your baby will not be in them for long. 0-6 months, 3-6 months and 0-3 motnhs sizes are what you want to stock up on. You'll want to get a lot of onsies and only a few outfits. Onsies come in long or short sleeve for the weather and they are a lot easier to get baby in and out of, especially since I can guarantee you'll be changing outfits a lot in the first 12 months. Also get a bunch of socks becuase they get lost due to how small they are.
As far as what brands of diapers and wipes it depends. Wipes are easy enough. Any store bought brand works good. (Kroger, Wal-mart, Target, ect) they all work well and they come in scented or unscented. They are also cheapest. Diapers on the other hand are tricky. My son has been through a few brands and it was trial and error. Some fit better than others did. I started him out in pampers swaddlers, but switched to Huggies snug n' dry. he was in huggies up until he was in a size 4 at which point I changed to Papmers little cruisers. Now he's in pull up's becuase he's potty training, but at night I put him in Kroger's store brand and those hold really well. I was never a fan of any kind of Luv's diapers. They were thin and long. My son is long and fat. The tabs also busted a lot too. As far as rash cream goes I used to use Desitin but I switched to Bordeaux's Butt Paste, becuase it it thicker and works better.
lastly, rummage sales and second hand stores are awesome. I got a lot of my son's stuff including his walker at Once Upon a Child, which is a second hand store. You don't have to buy all the stuff new, especially clothes. They grow out of them so fast you can get so much more and really cute stuff used.

Second pregnancy But first baby. Questions?

Lovely

Hi everyone i am just wanting to ask come questions since this is going to be my first actual baby i lost my first at about 14 weeks. On monday i will be 23 weeks.
What all did you buy around 23 weeks?
I found out the sex of my baby when i was 16 weeks and i also got another one at 21 weeks because the doctor couldn't see the spine that great so i know deff. its a girl.
Do you think i have to much already? I have my crib, changing table, all the beding, one box of diapers, whipes, clothes, carseat, and stoller, swing, bouncy, and boppie. Im not getting anymore till after the baby shower.
So what all did you have at 23 weeks for your little one

Answer
I waited until my baby shower to buy anything so I bought whatever I didn't get but needed. Someone said to get bunch of diapers, I wouldn't just because babies grow at different rates, and you will have to buy different sizes at different rates and amounts. If you want to start buying diapers, I would suggest you get 1 box of newborn size diapers, 1 box of size one diapers, 1 box size 2 diapers, 2-3 size 3 boxes. Here is a list of some newborn essentials, its personally what we used with our son, of course over time needs change, and different parents have different preferences, but this is a basic outline.

List of Newborn essentials
Car seat and stroller
Diapers (we use Pampers Baby Dry and they work very good, no leakage, but if you want a cheaper alternative, Parentâs Choice Walmart brand diapers are pretty good as well) 1 box Newborn size, 2 boxes size 1, two boxes size 2, and 3 boxes size 3 (you donât want to overstock on diapers, because you never know how big the baby will be and how fast it will grow. Donât open boxes that you are not using, in case the baby grows out of a size, you can exchange unopened box for different size or brand , Walmart will let you do that for sure)
Wipes- I like the store brand ones like Babies R Us, Target, or Walmart
Onsies (otherwise known as bodysuits)- Newborn size pack of about 6 (for newborn I would recommend buying onsies long sleeved that cover the hands, so the baby doesnât scratch itself.)
Size 0-3 months about 6 onsies
Size 3-6 about 6-9 onsies
Pants (Walmart sells great pants, I think they are Faded Glory, that are cotton and skinny at the bottom, which is great, especially for a newborn baby, you can put socks over pants and layer with another set of clothes on top if it is cold, or for summer nights, these pants donât expose babyâs legs as much as regular pants do, which you donât want when it is cold)
Sweaters (couple heavier ones and couple light ones, preferable without a hood, hoods just donât seem comfortable for baby to lay on)
Pack of socks
Pack of hats
Couple going out outfits, but donât buy anything less than 0-3 months (Babies really do grow fast)
Receiving Blankets (get as much as you can) I use them as towels after giving baby a bath, swaddling, diaper changing cover, etc.
Swing
Bassinet (or just a crib) or playpen (some come with little bassinet for baby to sleep in and changing table, and also can be used instead of a crib when baby gets older)
Crib/Bassinet sheets
Bathtub- we use Fisher-Price Precious Whale and we like it so far, its lightweight, cheap, and has plenty of room for bigger baby (and can be used from newborn size)
Baby Shampoo and Body wash
Grooming Kit
Wash cloths
I would actually make a medicine kit-get fever reducing meds, gripe water (naturally calming) etc
Breastfeeding pillow
Nipple cream
Electric Breast Pump (with all the essentials like storage bags)
Bottles
Formula (just in case, get one can, we use Babies R Us Advantage, its comparable to Similac Advance but almost 50% cheaper and just as goodâ¦.we tried both)
Bibs (preferably that have the closing tab on the side instead of the back, I found it was more comfortable for my baby)
Drying rack
Microwave sterilizer
Bottle warmer (very very useful if bottle feeding)
Formula Dispenser
Pacifiers (My son loves Avent, plus it comes with a cap so the pacifier stays clean)
Diaper Genie (I heard it was useless, well when my sonâs poo started smelling, it wasnât useless anymore!)
Thermometer if it doesnât come with the grooming kit, which it should
Diaper Bag (although a big purse with lots of pockets and compartments will do)
Toys (babies love toys that make noise, like rattles)
For later: High Chair, walker( or jumperoo or exercauser)
I think that covers most of it. Check out craigslist.com, you will find a lot of good products for much cheaper)

What are some of your favorite accents?

meee

I have an...American accent? I suppose. Uhh, it's not Southern, I live in Northern U.S.

For those of you not from the U.S. do we even have an accent? Haha.

What are your favorite accents?

Mine is Italian, and British. (When it's not the snobby-sounding British accent, which it rarely sounds snobby)

Answer
i like light french accents, the french language is most lovely.

british and australian accents are nice, some are fancy.

i have a thing for irish and scottish accents . . . lol. they are SO attractive! xd

i find chinese accents funny for some reason . . . haha. im chinese but born in america, people say i have a valley girl accent. haha.

What do you think of british accents?

DizzeeBee

For my group's IB Theory of Knowledge presentation, we are going to look at the different accents across the UK and how they affect our perceptions of people, whether they are related to class (or appear to be), how accents differ from dialects, how british accents are perceived internationally, what implications having a certain accent has etc.

Survey-

Where are you from?
How many british accents can you think of? Name them.
Where do you think your knowledge of these accents comes from?
Can you think of stereotypes of this accent?
Do you think these stereotypes are accurate?
Anything else you'd like to add?

Answer
Cambridgeshire, England, but I live in the North now.

Geordie, Liverpudlian, Brummie, Cockney, Scouse, Scottish, Northern Irish, Welsh..

By asking people; "So where are you from?"
There are so many different British accents.

I try not to apply stereotypes to accents, because I know what it feels like. Everyone where I live thinks I "talk posh" since I spent most of my childhood in Cambridge (that's where I picked up mine). "Posh" leads to "snobby", it's not a nice stereotype!

Person called "RM" - Yeah. Thanks for that. :-/

What is your 1 year old's favorite toy?

yahooey

My husband and I will be celebrating our 9th wedding anniversary on the 8th...tomorrow. I've had his gift for some time, but we want to give gifts to the kids as well. I'm thinking of getting our daughter roller skates...she's been wanting them for months now...but I don't know what to get our 12 month old son. Suggestions? What's your 1 year old's favorite toy?

Answer
Happy Anniversary!

My son absolutely loves balls and trucks, he really is all boy. Those tonka trucks (army, construction, etc) and any kind of soft ball toy will keep him busy for a long time.

Toys for a 1 Year Old?

Rylie's Mo

My daughter just turned one on Friday. I am curious as to what are the best toys for her at this point. (Ones that will help her learn and develop motor skills. Thanks.

Answer
Ones I had, or would have liked to have: VERY simple shape sorter - like with many copies of only 3 shapes; those things with 5 different buttons/switches/levers that pop up 5 different toys when you manipulate the buttons/switches/levers; small swimming pool; nesting cups / nesting dolls; sandbox + shovel; a bouncy ball of the right size (about 6" diameter); music toys - simple ones! like rattles or drums that make a variety of different sounds; some simple toys that have wheels; clear toys containing water and shiny things that can be shaken and you watch the things "swimming" inside; bubble blower (for you to use and child to watch); a top (also mainly to watch you use it but she might be able to get it going briefly); and board books with lots of pictures - still my 16 month old's favorite thing! She has learned almost all the words she has from those. She loves ones that have shiny stuff attached inside, like some of the more durable touch/feel ones, and the Katz lift-the-flap ones are good although they need protection from tearing and folding.

Interest in dolls might increase in the next few months - try a brightly colored ragdoll? Soon she'll be ready for push/pull toys, like a wagon or toy shopping cart, doll stroller, toy lawnmower etc. Oh, and we also have a set of foam blocks made by Sassy that has little cubbyholes in each one, with a small soft toy inside -- that she enjoyed a lot. Surprising to see how fast she learned to match the toys to their blocks.
http://www.sassybaby.com/product?productid=157&product=Peek-A-Boo%20Blocks

Some of what I've listed might seem too advanced at first but in the next couple months they should be just right! I'm also *still* searching for one of those tub toys that suctions to the wall and has tubes and waterwheels & such, that the child can pour water into.

Should I get a LeapFrog Tag Jr. or the regular one for my 2.5 year old?

Buda411

I am debating on the LeapFrog Tag Jr. vs regular one for my toddler. Why do you like/hate it? Does it really help with reading? TIA!

Answer
My 2.5 year old has had the Tag Jr for about 6 months (she got it for her 2nd birthday) and I like it, but I don't love it and I don't think it will "help her read"...

My daughter loves books and actually will play with them frequently all day, either having me read them, pretending to read them herself, or lining them up from room to room and walking on them like a bridge (go figure, maybe she'll be an engineer? lol). The Tag Jr. doesn't get played with a whole lot -- she chooses other, regular, books much more often. Perhaps, because they have more and "better" pictures? She will actually grab her brother's Tag books more often than her Tag Jr books (not necessarily the reading part of it - just the books).

The Tag Jr. is like any toy "novelty" in my house that she'll use for a couple days then stop using, and then a couple weeks later, she might stumble upon it again and use it for a bit. On the other hand, when we go to visit family (a long car drive) she will use the Tag Jr a lot. And, if I sit with her, she'll read to me with the Tag Jr., kind of opposite of the effect I was going for when I bought it, but it works too. (I'd say the same is true for the regular Tag -- my son uses it a bit more than my daughter uses the Tag Jr. but he goes in lapses too)

Soooo, in my experience, I don't think it'll be what drives your daughter to read but I don't think it's a complete waste of money as my daughter does enjoy it, just not as much as regular books. But, if you do a lot of traveling, it is definitely worth it, it's amazing what becomes the favorite toy while stuck in the car for 10 hours!

One other thing of note, someone gave my son the TJ Bearytales "reading system" around the same time we got the Tags, and that has actually gotten the same if not more use than either the Tag or Tag Jr. by my kids, and we only have one book with it! They, unfortunately, don't make it anymore, but I just looked them up on ebay and you can still get them and additional books there, probably for a lot more money than what they originally sold for, but I figured I'd mention it just in case you were interested.

ETA: I just reread your question and realized you asked which one to go with -- since your daughter is already 2.5, I would probably go with the regular Tag, it might be harder to master it at first but she'll outgrow the Jr. pretty soon.

How can a born rich person be bored?

Casey Johnson said that she was bored...

There are million of things to do...

If she got rid of her maid.... maybe she can clean up her own house.

Answer
Money doesn't always buy happiness. It can buy things that make you happy, but that wears off. What happens when you've bought every imaginable thing that makes you happy but the novelty wears off? You get depressed, bored, sad and lonely.

I guess you could say that being very rich and being very poor are the same in some ways. Rich people have too much and poor people don't have enough. I would actually find it worse being rich because at least poor people KNOW that they'd be over the moon if they got a new car, a new pair of shoes or even an extra $100. Rich people look in shop windows and realise that nothing on that display will make them happy.

In a nutshell, it's not always material things keep you happy and occupied. No one knows what went on in her personal family life - perhaps she lacked attention from a very young age and was never taught how to occupy herself.

PS: This reminds me of not long ago when my cousin (a toddler) was playing in the loungeroom with one toy - a set of blocks. He seemed to be having a lot of fun and it was occupying him for a long time, but when I took him into his toyroom FILLED with toys he played for 10 minutes and got bored.

Chess for Kids?

Q. Anyone know a good site where I can print out flash cards to show how each piece moves? It's for a 5 year old. Thanks.
I am teaching my niece. She watches me play online and she wants to learn. I don't think 5 is too young; I learned when I was 6 or 7.

And thanks to the 3 who answered so far.

Answer
Even better....
Toys-R-Us has a learning chess set. It's really nice. On the back of each piece on its base there is a diagram of how that piece moves.

Also, Staples has an excellent computer game called "Majestic Chess" for $10. The "story mode" introduces the new player to the board, and the pieces and then has a quiz on what you've learned. If you answer the questions correctly, you are awarded a new chess piece to play with in the next challenge. It is the most fun way to learn the game that I've seen. You are actually building a chess army as you progress through the story mode and as you earn new pieces, you will be challenged to put them to work on the board. Your challenge may be just to capture a pawn, a rook, or another piece. But eventually, it will challenge you to checkmate the king. An excellent, well-thought-out teaching tool.

I'm excited that your 5 yr. old is learning chess! It's a magnificent game and will give a lifetime of enjoyment. My co-workers and I love playing as we work. (We pass around this really cool magnetic chess "wallet" so the boss won't see! Sh-h-h-h!)

Also, if you child has a Gameboy Advance or a Nintendo DS, there is a wonderful cartridge for it called "Virtual Kasparov". Great fun you can take with you on the go! (You may have to search online for it...it's hard to find, but well worth it.) It plays easy to beat chess games as well as harder ones.

Good luck! I hope this helps! Maybe your child will be the next Garry Kasparov or Judit Polgar (if a girl.)

If a kid does not appreciate a toy, is there any other way to teach her?

Mick

to appreciate it other than taking the toy away from her?

Answer
I would make the kid take the toy to goodwill, or salvation army where a less privileged child could appreciate the toy! Explain it all to your child, and make them hand it over at the donation site. It might make them appreciate their toys more, and take care of them better.

Do you buy your kids' lots of toys?

Q. I do. I've always read that they learn thorugh playing with toys. I make it into a NECESSITY not a luxury. She is not spoiled but I do buy her Fisher price little people, snuggle kins etc.. My sister is mroe well off than I am and she acts jealous of my kids toys becuase she thinks of them as a luxury and would rather buy stuff for herself (Lately its 100 dollar bottle of some weight loss stuff). So she only takes hand me down toys which she doesnt care if theyre clean/safe etc.. she doesnt even wash them first. Anywy im very annoyed because she came over here making comments that i Must be rich to have so many toys for my kid. It pisses me off becuase im in poverty (literaly below the poverty line) and she is liek middle class.
She wont spend one penny on toys for her kids. If there not for free, she wont get it. then she also puts them all in the closet so that they dont make a "mess' so they kids never get to play with them anyway. so there always getting in trouble then seh yells @ them all day.

Answer
Your sister sounds as though she needs to get priorities straight. Children's needs come before parent's wants. She sounds lazy. Not because she's buying weight loss gimmicks, although that is a symptom, lol...but because she she doesn't wash the second hand toys before giving them to her kids, won't let them play with the toys because she'll have a mess to clean, and because she yells at them instead of talking to them and explaining why things are the way they are.

That said, buying your kid second hand toys makes good money sense, even for people who have money. Actually, especially for people with money. Ever wonder why they have it? It's because they don't spend it, and when they do it's on something they won't have to throw away in a year. You want to be rich? Do as rich people do. I learned that from my father, who is a Cheapskate to teach all Cheapskate's but has got everything he could possibly want or need and money to boot. He'd rather spend $1500 on one good tv, than $400 several times on crappy tv's that keep breaking.

It's the same concept with toys. Kids grow out of them so quickly it's foolish to spend too much money on them, you're literally throwing it away.

My kids didn't have "tons" of toys, one doll each. They had buckets upon buckets of blocks, hotwheels, k'nex, and little animals from the dollar store. They had puzzles and more BOOKS than they could count. That is where money is well spent. Education & imagination. We bought a lot of board games, even when they were 2 there were games they could play and learn with. They had soccer balls, basketballs, skipping ropes, chalk...outside toys.

Now they're teenagers and don't want everything in sight. They know that what they ask for better be something they really want because Greedy gets nothing, and they'd much rather have a $200 camera than a bunch of little stupid things that amount to $200.

They also work and save to get most of their belongings. We buy them stuff at Christmas and birthdays, but if they want that Wii game that's being released next month they had better find a driveway to shovel and pray for snow.

Toys at their age are not "necessity". They are luxury. That's a lesson that should be instilled at a very early age. They'll appreciate everything they have so much more.

As for the stuff I have bought them....all still being used. They're 14 & 12. What they don't use themselves, my nieces and nephews get lots of use out of when they come over. They don't take a lot of space (and I live in an itty bitty apartment, so I'd notice, lol) so I don't see myself ever getting rid of them (aka, throwing away money).

Quality not quantity.

Leads in kids toys?

Most of my babys toys are from china! Her theme is Hello Kitty. So i've been collecting a bunch of hello kitty things such as stuff animals, hello kitty figures, lamps, tin boxes, those hello kitty mcdonalds toys. Its all made from china! should i be worried?!? Shes just one & puts everything in her mouth. Do i need to throw them out? One of fisher price toys on the recall list she got on christmas so would it still contain lead?

Answer
I would go find the fisher price web site and go through their recall list. I found a toy on there my kids have and reported it, they are suppose to be sending me a package to return the toy and then giving me a coupon for the toys worth to buy a different toy, not on the list. So go check it out, but try to keep her away from any toys you are concerned about until you can find out if they need to be returned. I also saw on the news there is a "Lead Test Kit" you can buy at most hardwear stores so you can test your childs toys with out having to try searching through all the recall lists. Good Luck, and be safe

how can you stop two siblings(boy-11, girl-8) from antagonizing each other??

xxxclsv

i have a talk with them almost everyday if not more than once a day. they understand, but they are right back to fighting, arguing, etc. i am the first born we have different dads. i am 19.
and i know i am some what responsible for my brothers actions he is really sensitive and when we were younger i picked on him...hard...i make up for it everyday now since i found my way...i owe it to him
yeah and they just moved to here like 7 mths ago and there isnt much to do they are always inside because the only thing they look forward to is going to the walmart...lol

Answer
Tell them they can't be with each other anymore. Make them be in different rooms, without showing favoritism (you can't have one kid in the room with the tv and the other not), eat separately, etc. until they miss one another.
or
Ask them to think about what they can do for fun together when the entire family has to stay home because of swine flu. Maybe if they think of all the fun they COULD have together, they will be more positive about one another.

Since you are older, you have the advantage of sitting back and watching them. Maybe you can figure out what they get out of the fights. Is it attention from one another, attention from others, feeling like a victim or like a powerful controller? Once you figure out what's so attractive about the arguing, you can take away that part of it so there's no payoff for arguing.

You can also see what triggers the fights.
Are they competitive with one another? Is one kid trying to get the other's attention? Is one kid using the other kid's stuff without permission and nobody is backing up the family rules about that?

Somebody should explain to these kids that fighting all the time is not good for the health. It's not normal and it's too stressful. If they are unhappy about something, they should be able to calmly resolve the situation or ask an adult to help them. They need to know that most of their friends and other outsiders would be horrified at their behavior. Maybe if they want to act like 2 year olds they should be playing with baby toys again? You can give them back when they act their age.

Is your mom and their dad also working to stop these fights? The whole family should be working together on this. But at least, you can make sure that they don't fight around YOU.

Good luck. This is no fun. I hope one of these ideas works for you.

Since you are 19, I hope that you are going to school and getting yourself some advanced education, which you will need to make it on your own in this tough economy. If you are babysitting the kids during the day time, maybe you can take classes when they are at school and at night or on weekends. It's a great investment in yourself and you're worth it. You go girl!

------
I just read your extra information. I'm sure that they are stressed out about the move and like you said, a bit bored. The best thing you could teach them is to make their own fun and to think about someone other than themselves. Go with them and get involved in helping others. Maybe there is a neighbor who is too old to take care of his or her yard or to walk their dog. Maybe there are some small kids they can help entertain. Go out and walk, swim, bike, if your neighborhood is good for that. Take advantage of free programs at the library, museums, etc. Go take photos. If you have to stay indoors, do some craft projects, cook, build things, learn things, try yoga, make your own book or photo album. Since you have access to the internet, you can find directions for everything from doing Japanese origami to recipes for making cookies. Keep them busy and have fun together! Cheer them on and compliment them when they do good work. Tell them that you love them and show them their skills and talents. Some kids can't see how special they are until someone tells them that they are a great cook, they measure ingredients well, they really know how to use color, they sure have a great memory, etc.
