Puppy mills?

puppy love

I have been hearing a lot about how puppy mills are bad. I'm not sure what puppy mills are. Please explain!

Answer
Puppy mills are breeding facilities that produce purebred puppies in large numbers.

Often the puppies are sold directly to the public via the Internet, newspaper ads, or at the mill itself. In other cases they are sold to brokers and pet shops across the country.

The problems of puppy mills include: overbreeding, inbreeding, minimal veterinary care, poor quality of food and shelter, lack of human socialization, overcrowded cages and the killing of unwanted animals.

This situation frequently means buying a puppy facing an array of immediate veterinary problems or harboring genetic diseases that surface years later.

It's sad really, there are so puppies so most of them aren't given the attention they need... many of them have health conditions...and are neglected, this is why so many people are against puppy mills.

Oprah recently had an episode on puppy mills, to watch some of it and see what puppy mills are like go to the following link:

Food puppies can get?

Other than puppy chow and milk and water

Answer
Puppies should be introduced to dry kibble moistened with some warm water around 4 weeks old, while they begin to wean from their mother. A puppy should never be taken from it's mother before 8 weeks. A pup older than 8 weeks does not need milk or a milk sub of any kind, dry kibble and water is enough. Puppies and dogs of all ages should be fed high quality foods. They should never be fed a food that contains corn, wheat, or soy, as these are known allergens. California Naturals, Merrick, Innova, Wellness, and Blue Buffalo all make great puppy foods. Stay away from Purina, Eukanuba, Science Diet, and anything else you can buy at the grocery store. Table scraps should not be given.

How can I learn to speak with a pronounced British accent?

TOUCH MY P

I've always thought a British accent made people sound more intelligent even if they were, in reality, a complete moron. I at least want to give people the "illusion" that I'm capable of tying my own shoelaces.

Answer
Just act snobby. Then the accent will come naturally.

What Do You Make Of The British Accent?

Bernie Dem

I was brought up and still live in the center of London. When i go abroad they say i talk very posh and that i am a snob? Ahha what do you make of the accent?

Answer
First off, there is no "British" accent. Not only are the British isles made up of 3 different countries (England, Scotland and Wales) there are dozens of different regions with distinct accents (Glasgow, Edinburgh, Yorkshire, Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, London, Surrey, Bristol, Essex and Cardiff just to name a few). As a Brit, you should really not be encouraging the idea that only one British accent exists!

The accent which I presume you are referring to is known as "Received Pronunciation" (RP) and is spoken by less than 2% of the British population.

As for my opinion on it... well, I actually have the same accent, so for me it's perfectly normal. I can understand why people might think we are posh because the RP accent is associated with the Royal family and upper classes, etc. But "posh" and "snobby" are certainly not the same thing, and any person who doesn't distinguish between the two needs to find themselves a dictionary.

Hope I helped ;) xx

How many toys do your kids have?

Queen of t

Just wondering because I was watching super nanny and on almost every show they go to a house that is FULL of toys. Some parents have complete rooms filled w/ toys or the entire basement is dedicated too just toys because the garage is already full.
How many toys do your kids have? Is it because of accumulation (old toys that have not been thrown/given away) or just because you/family/friends buy them that many toys?
Do you have a toy rule (if you buy a toy than another has to be given away)?
What is your limit? Do you have limits on toys?
I remember growing up and not having that many toys. I had one toy box and it was filled with books, dolls, trophies, and random stuff I made at school and that was it. My mom would go through it and clear it out ever year and give some if it away.

Answer
My kids are older now, but when they were little, they had waaay too many toys. That's because they had four sets of grandparents with nothing better to do than shop for my kids!

We ended up "rotating" toys. I'd put most of them up in storage, and every month or so I'd switch them out. That kept them all new and fresh. We also put certain toys aside for special occassions - some to take with us on trips, some for when they were sick, some for mommy's "project days" (days when I was really busy working on a project and needed them to be entertained for a while).

When do your kids get toys? Only Birthday's and Christmas?

Jessica Vo

When I was little if it wasn't your B-day or Christmas or didn't come from a happy meal we weren't getting any toys. However, some of my daughter (age 4) friends have SO many toys. A ridiculous amount, and they get them pretty much every visit to the store. My nephew (age 9) is the same way and he doesn't even use them. Is this the norm nowadays? My kids usually only get gifts on B-days, Christmas and depending on how they do report cards. I used to do progress reports also until one time my then 8 year old son bought me all A's on his progress report than when his actual report card came out he had an "Unacceptable" in behavior lol. Which I actually found pretty funny.
@Betty white and I am: Lol you guy's are hilarious ahahahah.
@Mike Super Soakers aren't toys. They are necessities lol. We usually get new ones every easter not just for the kids. YOU WANNA GO TO WAR?

Answer
First. My daughter was born at the end of November... so basically she gets some toys for her birthday, and then more on Christmas, or more toys on her birthday and a skimpy Christmas from family. My sister grew up with a birthday like that and resented my June birthday. Well guess what, my son has a June birthday. :/ I don't want her resenting that he gets more toys, no one else but me has a birthday in June so he gets a party to himself (she shares November with 7 others I think at last count...), and it's summer so his party can be a water-gun fight and such.

Secondly, I homeschool with my kids, so if I buy my daughter a puzzle that's not exactly a toy. Neither are most coloring books, crayons, etc. Even things like hotwheel cars become experiments in how things move. Play-doh, especially, is educational. Maybe I'm making excuses here, but if something is bought and I use it educationally then I see it more as a tool than a toy.

Third, when I was growing up in the 80's during the recession we got an allowance and used that to buy toys for ourselves, along with doing chores. My kids are too young for an allowance yet, and when they do I'm not exactly going to hand them money but more help them buy what they want and take it out of a 'fund' that they manage like a checking account. But basically if I spend $4-10 a month on toys then that's about what I'd expect to be spending on allowance ANYWAY (a dollar a week for both, or about $8.)

Fourth, the worst time to buy toys is right before Christmas. The best time to buy toys is after Christmas and during sales. If I find, say, a wooden Cars Puzzle with 4 different scenes in a wooden carrying case for $3 instead of $10, then putting it off until Christmas means it won't be there.

Fifth, Christmas in my house is more about Christ. I actually make my kids wait to open any presents until either the day after Christmas if people are pushy, up until New Years day. I don't want the only times they get new toys to be Christmas and Birthday because it puts a LOT of emphasis on those days better rock and less appreciation for just the one or two presents they may get. My kids typically get 3-7 presents for their birthday, depending on family who comes. I don't want them to start getting "you only brought me a $3 present... gee thanks." because all the emphasis is now on getting toys. Instead, I want them to realize that the party is to celebrate them being born and to have fun, the toys are a bonus and you can always get more toys.

So, basically my kids get toys through the year if it's a good price, teaching them that if there is something you want then watch for it to go on sale and save up for it (they get told if we don't have enough money to buy that right now but will when we save up enough.) My daughter's toys are almost 80% all reused (ie, we find them at garage sales, goodwill, ARC, ebay, etc. Sometimes they're broken and I have to stitch them back together again.) She's 3 and she donates a LOT of toys every year to a Christmas group that gives toys to families with kids at Christmas and they're trying to work up to a birthday fund as well, so if we buy a reused toy, fix it up, and she loves it for a year then donates it... well...

We almost never buy toys at full price though. If it's not on sale then she will agree that we can wait for it to go on sale and watch for it, meanwhile saving up. I like the attitude she's having towards toys right now to be honest, and her excitement about her birthday being more about the type of cake we'll make than the toys she'll get.

Decorate toddler's bedroom like Preschool?

famBam

Anyone have ideas/suggestions as to how I can decorate my toddler's bedroom to mimic a preschool? Or where I can find this type of decor? I'd like to be teaching him at home before he starts his little preschool in a few months..such as teaching him the ABC's, numbers, colors, shapes, etc. TIA =]

Answer
Find preschool things, basic toys, and accessories in basic colors. Keep the focus on primary colors (red, yellow, blue), simple shapes, clean lines etc.

You can get a white board that is usually used for offices and put that up. Another idea could be to get a toddler-sized table and chair set. You could also put up the alphabet around the room and numbers as well.

I really like your idea, but do you want your little boy to sleep in a preschool? Would you want to sleep in a school? Remember, while decorating and teaching him, that the room still is his bedroom, not a class room. It should be a place where he can learn, but also a place where he can play as he wishes, and not be overwhelmed by feeling like he's sleeping "at preschool".

I have a question about your toddler.?

Sara

I have a 2 year old boy and he takes a toy truck that he has and he throws it. But somethings the things he does is girlish. My husband was afraid that he could be gay. The way he acts sometimes he acts like he is gay. Can you tell me how your toddler acts.

For example, if a girl....does she act like a girl like being gentle with her toys. If a boy, are they rough with their things.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...thanks.

Answer
all toddlers are active and explore things in their world. they don't even know what "gay" is to make a choice to be that. It's not uncommon at toddler and into preschool age for little boys to pick up a doll or girls to play with trucks and cars. It doesn't mean they are going to be gay or a lesbian.
Chances are once they start preschool they will figure out that there are differences in girl toys and boy toys and will gravitate to their gender more easily.

My son is 1 1/2 and he plays with trucks and cars, throwing or rolling balls and blocks and the like. He also carries around his teddy bear and stuffed animals like a tiger, elephant or monkey. He plays on swings or with ride on's and can be active outside and just as content to be cuddly on a lap inside looking at a book or watching a movie on family night. I guess I would say what he does is normal for his age. He plays rough, but he doesn't like to be "too rough" where he gets hurt or something is scary to him, but he'll play in the sand or the mud with the best of them. :)
I wouldn't worry.
Now, if he's six and trying to dress up in a tu-tu and go off to ballet class, then yes, I'd say you have something to worry about, but for now, he's just exploring his world and doesn't really understand about gender differences or that some things are more "girlish" than others.

Best crib side toy? and crib side toy?

Masons Mom

Our son is 6 months and were looking to purchase a crib side soother/toy. What brand do you have? does your baby like it? Is it entertaining or does it put them to sleep? and how old is he/she?

TY:)

Answer
I like Fisher Price, they have great toys for every age, from newborn to toddlers. Regarding bedside toys, it didn't keep interest for long time for any of my two boys-it interested them while they were really small, around 2-3 months. When they were 6 months, they were already more interested in activity/musical/educational toys. Neither toy put any of them to sleep, i.e. they never used ay toy to lul themself to sleep. Anyway, I hope that you will have more luck with those :)

What Fischer Price toddler toy is this?

buffalo_bi

The other day on Aqua Teen Hunger Force, there was a playroom scene featuring various toys, including a familiar toy from my childhood(early 80s) lol. It was a rotary phone with a face and wheels. It was red and white in color with a face on it(if you can imagine such thing). I think they made this toy for years(probably in the 70s and 60s as well as the 90s too?). What is the name for this toy? Seeing it on Aqua Teen Hunger Force stirred up memories lol.
Oh this toy might have been in the Toy Story movie too.
Good call, but the one I'm referring to is just black and white...not multicolored...and it's shinier(i.e., not made of wood).
Did I say black and white? Whoops, I meant red and white.

Answer
It was called the Chatter telephone. I think it first came out in 1961. I had one too!

A great source of these kind of things are from Alex Toys or Learning Resources - search the web for either.

poll -- tv, computer, and educational toys?

...

I'm interested in changing notions of how best to further a child's development.

1. at what age do you consider it in a child's best interests to watch tv? (note that I don't mean in their best interests just because it preserves mom's sanity or allows her time to make dinner, though I certainly can relate to that).

2. what's your opinion of tv or videos marketed as being educational (like Baby Einstein or SuperWhy)

2. at what age do you consider it in a child's best interest to have time to play on the computer or use the internet?

4. how important to a child's development do you consider toys marketed as "educational"? What do you consider to be an "educational" toy? Are you more likely to buy a toy marketed as educational?

5. which do you consider more educational for a toddler -- traditional toys like blocks, dolls, pretend props, balls, crayons, etc. or toys that teach abcs, 123s, colors, etc.?

6. how much time a day do you spend reading to your child?
my personal feelings (I'm still interested in yours even if they're different and I appreciate everyone' input):

1. never, though a little probably won't hurt, either
2. not as good as learning from a person
3. school-age
4. i think they're a marketing scam
5. traditional toys
6. at least a half hour per kid, often substantially more

Answer
1. Kindergarten age and older.
2. I personally am not a fan. I see the commerical for Baby Eistein from time and time and laugh at the woman sitting on the couch with her baby watching the program. Are you kidding me? You can't think of anything better to do with your baby? Kids learn SO MUCH MORE by you interacting with them and develop skills A LOT faster.
3. 8ish. In today's world, kids need to know how to use the computer and they're hand writing things less and less. I'm a teacher and over the last couple of years I've been told more and more to have the kids type their homework. The amount of time should be limited though and parents should know what they're doing on the computer.
4. What I consider "educational toys" are things that "interact" with a child. Something that sings the alphabet, says the name of the number when they push it, asks them to push, pull etc certain colors etc. What I think is the most educational are simple toys: dolls, blocks, paint etc. They allow a child to use their imagination, improve motor skills etc which is just as important as knowing your letters and numbers. Everyone has a different opinion on what is education and what isn't. The little label on the box is just that: an opinion.
5. Traditional toys are more educational in my opinion for toddlers BY FAR. Your child is going to develop motor skills from a toys that teaches the alphabet but they will from scribbling with crayons or catching a ball. They're learn their numbers much faster by counting blocks in their hand and building with them than they will listening to something count. I also find it hard to sit with my kid and play/interact with one of those toys. We live in an electronic world....but simple toys are way better my opinion.
6. I read to my kids for 15-30mins a night. Sometimes a little more during the day. My older two read for a little while longer on their own before the go to sleep.
Best Wishes =]

Answer
honestly, it's entirely up to u. he's ur kid. and it's his birthday. a kid only turns 4 after all. just make sure that it's what he really wants and will play with it often.

whenever i buy anyone a birthday present, i always try to make sure the person or kid gets the maximum amount of use from it. the legos choice might be better simply cause even if he outgrows diego, he can still use the legos to build other things. hope he has a great birthday!

do you buy your kid a toy every time you go to walmart?

sigmund

i have noticed this time after time. i am in the toy section of a store like target or walmart and a mom is telling her kid "you can get ONE toy" or "as long as it's under $20" and usually the kid is complaining or acting kind of bratty, so he doesn't deserve anything anyway.

um, is this just normal now? my parents were not poor, but they did not give me toys just on a whim. it seems parents just automatically give their kids things without having to earn it. birthdays, holidays, etc i understand, but i think people are just giving kids toys to shut them up, and to me, that sends the wrong message. they are not learning the value of money and they are being taught to have an entitlement mindset.

i hope new parents will resist this trend...

Answer
HECK NO. IF I DID I'D BE BROKE. I GO TO WALMART ABOUT 3 TO 4 TIMES A WEEK. I LOVE WALMART I SHOP FOR EVERYTHING THERE.
IF PARENTS DO THAT THEN THEIR CHILDREN WILL EXPECT SOMETHING EVERY TIME THEY GO SOMEWHERE. THAT IS NOT GOOD. KNOW WHAT REALLY DRIVES ME NUTS? WHEN PARENTS DON'T CONTROL THEIR KIDS IN PUBLIC, THEY LET THEM MISBEHAVE AND STAND THERE AND ACT LIKE NOTHING IS WRONG. WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THAT? I SAY PADDLE THER @SS. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR MISBEHAVING. OR WHEN I SEE PARENTS CUTTING DEALS WITH THEIR KIDS, THAT IS SO STUPID. THEY SAY THINGS LIKE "IF YOU BEHAVE I'LL GET YOU AN ICE CREAM CONE," OR IF YOU BEHAVE WE'LL GO TO THE PARK." STUFF LIKE THAT. AND I'M THINKING TO MYSELF, WHAT IS THEIR PROBLEM, THEY ARE THE PARENTS, YOU DON'T CUT DEALS WITH YOUR KIDS. THEY SHOULD LISTEN TO YOU NO MATTER WHAT. SOME PARENTS NEED CLASSES OR SOMETHING. SOME THINGS I SEE AND HEAR I JUST CANT BELIEVE. AND THEN PEOPLE WONDER WHY THEIR KIDS GET OUT OF CONTROL, WELL DUH, THEY MAKE THEM THAT WAY.

Buying advice

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Tablets are just toys to me. They can not handle the work load like Laptops and Desktops and do not have the storage capacity you will end up needing.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate. My experience with them are limited because the few I worked on made me think they were designed in such a way as it would take a blow torch and a jack hammer just to disassemble them.

Choose wisely.

I want a new laptop for my birthday...?

Zoey

So, I have a Dell laptop, and I absolutely hate it! It's at very least 3 years old, I have found things that said they were last updated in 2010... It's not the best, and can be very laggy sometimes on things like Minecraft. It overheats quite a lot and sucks in hair like it's nothing. I've wanted to use my laptop for CoD, Medal of Honor, and some racing games, but I fear it will lag to much. My birthday is in July...
Also, I have a Bamboo Tablet... My laptop does not let my tablet driver or w/e run unless i have it plugged in when I start it up, making it impossible to do wireless now. The side of it also broke, partially from it being old, and partially from dropping it.
Also, the button to click is broken, so I often find myself tapping the trackpad to click, which can get frustrating because I have to press so hard...
This laptop is also refurbished, and my dad thinks he can just constantly keep fixing this one when it does not want to work.

I would prefer a screen resolution of 1366x768 because I will use my USB to put things on my new laptop like backgrounds, so I'd like to have them fit instead of finding identical or new ones for my laptop...
I would prefer it to be under $500, but it CANNOT go over $700...
Thank you.

Also, I'm asking because I am not computer savy. I would end up picking out a worse laptop, lol...
Oh, another problem with my laptop is it doesn't fucking let me change the brightness. :| It broke a long time ago...

Answer
Get a Nerf gun! I am 15 and at the moment I have a Recon, a Raider and a nitefinder. I will hopefully soon be getting a Longshot too. If you want to get one but don't want to spend too much I would recommend the Maverick but if you want to get something a bit bigger and better you should get a Longshot or the new Stampede both good and very cool blasters. You can check these and more out on the Nerf site here:

c) Game device - http://www.toysrus.co.uk/Babies-R-Us/Toys/Learning-Toys/Bruin-Preschool-Sound-Steering-Wheel(0071788)

I THANK THOSE WHO TAKE THEIR TIME TO RESPOND TO THE ABOVE CHOICE.

Answer
I like gift B1. Very cute and its something that she will enjoy for a longer time than the others. I used to work at Toys R Us and kids love those little car/bikes. My second choice is B2. Either one of those will do. Very good idea and its awesome that you're taking the time to find that perfect gift for your stepdaughter. Kudos to you!

Are those chatnow communicators any good?

Answer
Amid higher gasoline prices and other effects of hurricane Katrina, Todd plans to cut her toy spending in half.

"You look at the economic climate overall, and this is not a good time to run up the credit cards," said Todd, of East Lansing, Mich., who will spend about $100 US on toys for each child, down from $200 last year.

The human suffering from Katrina has also made Todd re-evaluate her budget for toys.

"We want to be more about the experience of giving, and less about the getting," she said.

Those sentiments, likely to be shared by millions of parents this holiday season, are a depressing turn for the $20-billion US toy industry. If parents buy only one or two fewer toys each, the collective frugality could give the industry its third straight year of falling holiday sales.

Toy retailers, preparing for a difficult season, plan big discounts and other promotions.

"It's going to be extremely competitive to draw customers to their stores," said Jim Silver, editor-in-chief of Toy Wishes, a trade publication.

Price wars are already under way. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. began by slashing prices up to 30 per cent on toys including the latest version of Hasbro Inc.'s electronic pet Furby, and Fisher-Price's Shout Dancing Elmo. Toys R Us Inc. responded by lowering its prices.

Wal-Mart, hurt last year when it didn't offer enough discounts, is expected to mark down more aggressively this year. Toys R Us, meanwhile, is offering more exclusive toys than it did last year, and other retailers are also ready for a battle to get customers into the store.

"We will absolutely be competitive with Wal-Mart this holiday season," said Lena Michaud, a spokeswoman at Target Corp., who declined to elaborate further.

But price competition from discounters is just part of the problem - the toy industry needs some big hits this holiday season to make children want more toys. After suffering overall sales declines of three per cent in both 2003 and 2004, toy companies have already seen sales of traditional toys - dolls, games and action figures, for example - drop five per cent from January through August, according to NPD Group Inc., a market research firm in Port Washington, N.Y.

What's hurting traditional toy sales is that children are growing out of toys at a younger age and are more interested in trendy clothing and gadgets like digital music players. Meanwhile, the uncertain economy, particularly higher gasoline prices, have made parents more conservative when it comes to toy shopping, according to Silver.

Still, plenty of toys have caught parents' notice this year. Toys related to the latest Star Wars and the Batman movies, such as Darth Vader helmets from Hasbro and the Batmobile from Mattel Inc. have done well, along with new versions of retro toys from the 1990s such as Play Along Inc.'s Sky Dancers and electronic learning products such as LeapFrog Enterprises Inc.'s Leapster.

For the holidays, the toy industry has high hopes for a series of children-friendly versions of adult gadgets, including VCamNow, a $79.99 US video camera for eight-year-olds and ChatNow, a $74.99 US pair of two-way radio communicators, both from Hasbro. Toy companies are also coming out with educational toys that are more fun to play with, like LeapFrog's $99.99 US L-Max Learning system, which plugs into a television; and VTech Holdings Ltd.'s $89.99 US V.Smile Pocket, a handheld version of the original V.Smile learning system.

There are also more advanced high-tech dolls such as Amazing Amanda from Playmates Toys Inc., a doll that can recognize her "mommy's" voice and respond after hearing it just a few times.

"We are living in a gadget-driven world, and kids want their own gadgets," said Chris Byrne, a New York-based independent toy consultant. "It makes them feel like they're part of the whole culture."

John Barbour, president of Toys R Us' U.S. store division, believes there are "a lot more exciting products" than last year, and is counting on such hits as Leapfrog's Fly, an electronic learning pen, and electronic characters like iZ, from Zizzle Inc. and Hasbro's I-Dog, both of which can be hooked up to an iPod, to boost sales.

Still, Barbour, whose company recently was taken private, said this will be the year that parents will be thinking about value and getting the fair price.

Debbie Chasse, of Winchester, Mass., the mother of two girls, said she will be spending the same amount on toys as last year, but will be "looking for more value, things that catch their eye, rather than my eye."

How can i be funnier?

Chrisx95x

My friend is REALLY funny, and im pretty funny too, but i want to be funnier. what are some ways to be funnier?

Answer
Well, that's a wide open request.

First, get some training.
Funny is not always natural; you CAN train to be funny. A fact you probably agree with or you wouldn't be asking for ways to get funnier. Look into local improvisation, clowning, theater, stand-up, and sketch-writing classes. Watch and read about comedy--and don't just watch to laugh, but watch and ask "what made that joke work?" and "would that have been funnier if...?"

Second, practice!
Enter comedy contests (especially film. The editing process can be very enlightening on how half a second can make the difference in a slight chuckle and a fall out of one's chair laugh). Go do stand-up at an open mike night. Tell jokes to friends and family. Yeah, some fail, but each time you learn a little more about why. Ask any professional stand up: they've all had nights where they bombed and that's how they honed their material.

Third, learn about comedy.
Get some books and read up on it. There's all sorts of comedy out there: parody, satire, puns, slapstick, comedia del'arte, political, low brow, high brow, prop, sketch, etc. Study up! You'll not only learn more about being funny, but you'll develop a range so that you aren't just one type of funny.

Fourth, learn about NOT comedy.
People love references. References to pop culture, to history, to politics, to current events. Some of the best and funniest comedians out there - Conan O'Brien, Al Franken, Bill Mahr, Dennis Miller, Jimmy Carr, Robin Williams circa 1980, Penn & Teller, etc - are also some of the smartest, most attuned, most up-to-date and informed people you'll ever meet. Knowledge gives your comedy breadth and depth.

Fifth, hang around funny people.
Funny people tend to make you funnier. You can study them, or just lose yourself in the moment with them.

Finally, don't try to be funny.
Seriously. Most comedians who feel the need to be "on" all the time actually aren't as all there as you'd think...and if you watch them, they aren't as funny as they seem, either. It's a trick. They throw so much mud at the wall that enough sticks, but they have a lot of misses, too.
And, if you try to hard to be funny, you forget that funny varies from person to person. Your "funny" friend may only be funny because of who he or she is around. Would those same jokes be funny to a preacher? A soldier? A man? A woman? etc. trying to be funny often limits your range in my experience. I prefer quality funny to quantity funny, myself. I'll take 10 REALLY good laughs in a 30 minutes sitcom to 30 OK ones, any day.
Besides, there is a great joy in being the "straight man" who sets the funny guy up. There's a reason there is a Laurel AND a Hardy, an Abbott AND a Costello.

Oh, and don't view laughs as the only gauge of whether or not you are being funny. Laughs can be misleading. Good comedians can also make you cry, cringe, and cuddle.
As Keith Johnstone put it (roughly): "You may drool and people may laugh. So, naturally, you drool again to get more laughs. Soon, you're known as 'the Drooling Comedian' which is NOT your goal. Don't be deceived by laughter."

???????HOW TO BE FUNNY?

Dylan PS

Not creepy. Funny. Not weird. Funny. Not annoying. Funny. Spontaneous, on the spot hilariousness. Kthx

Answer
racist jokes are funny. make fun of people of other ethnicity...think of something fun.. watch youtube videos that are funny.. stereotypical jokes.. try using accents...for example if you dont have an accent.. try imitating british accent or mexican accent or asian accent... that would be unexpected and you would make people laugh...watch funny videos.. like not another teen movie or the hot chick( rob schenider)... try mocking people that you think are funny.. have a sense of humor.. and be goofy instead being too uptight and serious... mostly funny people are goofy and dont take things too serious... funny people knows when to be funny and when to be serious... watch funny movies...be yourself... either you have it or you dont... some people are naturally funny and some people arent... ....

Answer
My kids cook, usually lunch or dinner. And they like cooking healthy food and sometimes unhealthy(like cake or brownies).

Easy recipes kids can cook?

Lauren

Today is mothers day, and I thought it'd be nice for my brother and sister (ages 6 and 4) to cook dinner with me so we can give mom a break. Does anyone know any recipes that are simple enough that they could make it with me? (if you could give one with basic household ingredients it would be great, I don't think we have any way to go food shopping right now.)

Answer
An easy meal that they could help with would be spaghetti, salad & garlic bread. You don't have to have "special" bread just use sandwich bread-butter it, sprinkle on powdered garlic and put it in the broiler a minute or two on each side. The salad would be easy for kids as they can tear the lettuce put it in bowls you can chop the veggies they can add them. Spaghetti sauce from a jar and pasta.

Another would be a simple tuna casserole with a salad and again bread. You would need tuna, cream of mushroom soup, egg noodles, cheese.

How about a pot roast (can be just about any roast you have that has been thawed) add potatoes, carrots, onions slow cook in crock pot or oven have the kids do a salad and again bread.

How about breakfast for dinner? My Mom used to make that for us and she and us kids loved it. Pancakes, french toast, eggs & potatoes w/toast.

What is a good homemade toy for a toddler?

Q. I am in a child development class for school and we have to make a child's toy. What toy is easy to make that also allows the child to learn and interact with?

Answer
How about a simple puzzle made from foam or cardboard. Shape sorter toys can be made easily. You can take a shoe box and cut holes in the top the same shape as your child safe objects. You can use blocks, toilet paper tubes and any object large enough they cant choke on for shapes. You could make a sock puppet and make a little play.

Kids ATV Ages 13-15?

Selena

OK well, im not a kid but a teen, 13-15, what kind of ATV should I get, I don't want one too small or too big. Please help!! Thank you! A link would also help.

Answer
my cousin is only 14 and she rides a 350cc. i'm 18 and i'm riding a 500cc(mostly for work). depends on if you want speed, 4weel drive, power. if you want speed you prabably want 2 go with a blaster, if you want 4 weel drive, its hard to say it jsut al;l depends on what you want the atv for.

if you want an atv for moving logs, going through mud, pushing snow(plowing) disking food plots(for hunting) disking your garden, going mostly in the woods, farm work. Hard stuff like that you probably want 4 weel drive anywere from 250-500cc

if you want to have speed, agility, racing, trixed out a little, out running cops? lol, you prabably want a atv 100-250(blaster and other racing atv's like that)

Do you think parents should beat there kids?

lexi22

Hey I need to write about parents beating there kids. I need 7 reason why or why not you think parents should beat there kids.
Yes i mean BEAT and not SPANK.
Please no cussing or words like crap and hell. my teacher says it not "appropriate" for class (me:rolls eyes)

Answer
No - parents should not literally beat their kids. Spank, yes. Beat, no.

And your teacher is correct. Using cuss words or words like "crap" and "hell" are not appropriate for public reading (maybe it is in the adult world - but even then, to a point). The reason for this is because it makes the author (you) look immature and gives the impression that you are not very well educated.

1 - Beating a child - whether or not you have good reason to - shows the child that it's okay to beat up other people - which is really NOT okay.
2 - The psychological ramifications can last well into their adult years.
3 - The child will not understand why he or she is being beaten because the parent doing the beating is angry and will probably not explain anything.
4 - The child will feel as though he or she is not loved - which could cause other behavioral problems later.

Can't think of any other reasons - sorry - I'm a few short.

what do you think of parents beating their kids?

tarkan

is it addiction? or psychological illness? or its the reflective behavior of their childhood life? what do you think is the best treatment for this behaviour?

Answer
Personally, I don't think that beating their kids is the right way to teach them a lesson. It isn't addiction or psycological illness, though. It may be a reflective behaviour of their childhood life. Their parents may have beaten them while they were a child. And as they grew up they probably believe that is a good way to disipline their kids. Most parents in America ground their children. And some parents beat their children. Beating their children is very wrong but it actually works to disipline your children. Why do some kids not repeat the bad stuff they have done? Because they don't want to be grounded again the same as they don't want to be beaten again. Which is more effective? Probably the beating. Sometimes parents also get really fustrated with their children how they are disobeying them; So they beat them. But the biggest reasons why it is bad to beat your children is because:
1. It hurts them.
2.Eventually they will be scared of their own parents.
3. They aren't learning from their mistakes. They just don't repeat the mistakes because they just don't want to get beaten.
The only treatment for this behaviour is to make the parents realize that, that isn't the right way to disipline your children.

Let's get creative! Do you know any home made baby toys?

Sweet Fann

My 6 months little boy get tired of his toys quite quickly (like most babies I guess) and I don't want to buy him new stuff all the time (I buy too much as it is I think). He recently started crawling and I found him going for 1.5 liter water bottles lying on the ground. So I took one, took the label off and a colorful ribbon, some beads and some other things that make a nice rattling sound (you can simply use dry pasta if you have nothing else in the house) inside the bottle. Then I put the cap on with super glue and gave it to him. He loves it! He played with it so much today, crawling after it all over the place.

Does anyone know of similar, easy to make, toys for babies?
Katie W: Not to brag or anything, but he's standing as well! He's been in a rush to grow up since he was born. I tell him to take it easy, but does he listen? No way ;)

Answer
We have something similar to those. I took smaller bottles (juice sized or travel sized) and filled them half way with water, added some drops of food coloring, filled the rest up with mineral oil (baby oil works too) and added some beads and glitter. Now we have a few "lava lamp" type bottles. The ones that rattle are awesome, too!

I made a couple of "crinkle bags" when he was younger and enjoyed the sound of plastic and paper crinkling. I made a small "pillow" out of fabric with a few plastic grocery bags as the stuffing. That gave him a safe, fun, crinkling thing to play with.

Some of my favorite home made toys are not really toys. Some of my son's favorites were old CDs that were scratched, some extra computer cables, tubes of lipgloss (with a screw top, not pop), and more recently the head phones for the computer. Of course we supervise him with these things since they aren't exactly "baby safe", but they've been a blast.

Making dyed silky scarves looks like a lot of fun too, especially for babies who have an obsession with tags.

How to wash baby toys if "surface wash only"?

Carrie Ann

I bought some used baby toys, and the directions indicate they are "surface wash only." I don't want to put the toys in the washing machine or use too harsh of a chemical to clean the toys because the baby will for sure put the toy in her mouth. Will soap and water sanitize the toy enough, and is soap too harsh of a chemical? Any ideas of what to use?

Answer
if they are hard plastic toys then you can use a cloth and 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, or 10 drops of tea tree oil to 2 oz of water. if they are stuffed toys that don't take batteries just wipe of any surface marks and toss them in dryer on high heat for 20 minute to kill anything on them. if they are stuffed toys with batteries then you can use soap and water or water and tea tree oil just remember the soap you use will stay on the fabric so don't use any thing too harsh, seventh generation or green works cleansers or tea tree oil would be best. once they are clean you can put them outside in the sun to help kill any bacteria on them as well.

Answer
Hello!

I am a huge fan of Disney World and have all of the books and merchandise so I thought I'd leave you a comment and see if I can help at all. I am 17, and have been to Disney World about 6 times and loved it all ages, I first went when I was 6 so I can sort of relate to your children's ages.

I'll go through each park and let you know what I feel is appropriate place / thing to do for a 4 and 5 year old, hopefully I will be of some help.

Magic Kingdom:
Donald's Boat = A water play area,
Mickey and Minnie's Houses = Great to explore, real houses with lots of hidden secrets,
Barnstormer = A young children's rollercoaster,
Jungle Cruise = A river boat with lots of audio-animatronic animals,
Pirates of the Caribbean = Is a maybe, as there is quite a large drop.
The enchanted tiki room = Audio-animatronic bord show,
Country bear jamboree = An audio-animatronic musical show with bears,
Tom Sawer Island = A huge play area kind of place with lots of room to explore,
Haunted Mansion = I went on it at 6 and found it hilarious! But some bits are a little spooky,
Liberty Belle Riverboat = Relaxing cruise
Main Street Vehicles = Can ride a fire engine, a tram, a horse and cart right up to the castle,
Cinderella's golden carousel = Pretty self explanatory
Mickey's Philharmagic = A 3D musical show with all disney characters,
Dumbo = Elephants which the kids can control to go up or down,
Peter Pan's Flight = An indoor ride in pirate ships that goes around Neverland,
It's a Small World = An indoor cruise around the world with lots of little singing dolls,
Mad Tea Party = Alice in Wonderland themed tea cup ride
Snow White's Scary Adventures = Is a maybe, as the witch scenes are dark and could be scary.
Winnie the Pooh = Definitely!!! Kids will love it, ride in a hunny pot around the 100 acre wood,
Tomorrowland Indy Speedway = Drive cars around a track
Carousel of Progress = A moving theatre that takes you into the past and future of technology,
Monsters Inc Laugh Floor = An interactive comedy kids show where they can talk to you,
Buzz Lightyear = A space ranger shooting game through Zurg's Planet,

EPCOT-
Journey into Imagination = A cute ride into the 5 senses with a purple character named figment,
The seas with nemo and friends = Climb into a shell and meet nemo and friends,
Spaceship earth = A ride through the life of communication,
Honey I shrunk the audience = A 3d interactive show,
Grand fiesta tour with three caballeros = A boat ride to find donald duck as he's lost in mexico,
Universe of energy = a moving theatre, but it's very ong and they may get bored...
Soarin' = lifted up into the air and put in front of a cinema screen,
Living with the land = boat ride through epcots greenhouses,
Turtle talk with crush = let your kids talk to crush the turtle from finding nemo

Hollywood Studios -
The Great Movie Ride = Go through some of the most famous movies including mary poppins and wizard of oz,
Beauty and the beast live = A musical show,
MuppetVision 3D = A 3D movie experience, FANTASTIC!
Honey I shrunk the kids movie set = Playground where everything is HUGE!
Backlot tour = Look behind the scenes at props,
Toy Story Midway Mania = Play 3D shoot out games while on a ride,
Journey into Narnia = Walk into narnia through a wardrobe,
Voyage of the little mermaid = A little mermaid show,
Playhouse disney = Live stage show usually either handy manny, bear in the bug blue houe, little einsteins, my friends tigger and pooh or mickey mouse clubhouse.
High School Musical Pep Rally = Live dance/singing show

Animal Kingdom -
Finding Nemo Show = A musical with huge puppets,
Kilimanjaro Safaris = A safari ride with real animals,
It's tough to be a bug = A 3D show with Flik from a bug's life, some bits may shock them as they touch seats etc.
Festival of the Lion King = A lion king themed show,
Pangani forest = A trail through forest to see hippos, birds and fish,
Wildlife express train = A train ride to see behind the scenes animal enclosures,
Affection section = Petting zoo,
Flights of wonder = Bird show,
The Boneyard = Play area where they can dig up dinosaur bones,
TriceraTop Spin = A dumbo-like ride with dinosaurs

So there you have it, those are the rides that I would deem appropriate for your girls.
Don't forget they can also meet lots of characters at each park, there are also night-time fireworks, shows and day-time parades for them to see.
There are lots of little hidden extras that will surprise them along the way too.

As well there is Downtown Disney full of shops that will entertain them; such as the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique where your little girls can get dressed up as princesses, have their hair and make-up done too. There is Once upon a toy, which is a HUGE toy shop. And also a lego store which has lots of lego sculptures inside and outside.

Also the monorail is exciting for kids as they can see Cinderella's Castle in the distance.
