Second pregnancy But first baby. Questions?

Lovely

Hi everyone i am just wanting to ask come questions since this is going to be my first actual baby i lost my first at about 14 weeks. On monday i will be 23 weeks.
What all did you buy around 23 weeks?
I found out the sex of my baby when i was 16 weeks and i also got another one at 21 weeks because the doctor couldn't see the spine that great so i know deff. its a girl.
Do you think i have to much already? I have my crib, changing table, all the beding, one box of diapers, whipes, clothes, carseat, and stoller, swing, bouncy, and boppie. Im not getting anymore till after the baby shower.
So what all did you have at 23 weeks for your little one

Answer
I waited until my baby shower to buy anything so I bought whatever I didn't get but needed. Someone said to get bunch of diapers, I wouldn't just because babies grow at different rates, and you will have to buy different sizes at different rates and amounts. If you want to start buying diapers, I would suggest you get 1 box of newborn size diapers, 1 box of size one diapers, 1 box size 2 diapers, 2-3 size 3 boxes. Here is a list of some newborn essentials, its personally what we used with our son, of course over time needs change, and different parents have different preferences, but this is a basic outline.

List of Newborn essentials
Car seat and stroller
Diapers (we use Pampers Baby Dry and they work very good, no leakage, but if you want a cheaper alternative, Parentâs Choice Walmart brand diapers are pretty good as well) 1 box Newborn size, 2 boxes size 1, two boxes size 2, and 3 boxes size 3 (you donât want to overstock on diapers, because you never know how big the baby will be and how fast it will grow. Donât open boxes that you are not using, in case the baby grows out of a size, you can exchange unopened box for different size or brand , Walmart will let you do that for sure)
Wipes- I like the store brand ones like Babies R Us, Target, or Walmart
Onsies (otherwise known as bodysuits)- Newborn size pack of about 6 (for newborn I would recommend buying onsies long sleeved that cover the hands, so the baby doesnât scratch itself.)
Size 0-3 months about 6 onsies
Size 3-6 about 6-9 onsies
Pants (Walmart sells great pants, I think they are Faded Glory, that are cotton and skinny at the bottom, which is great, especially for a newborn baby, you can put socks over pants and layer with another set of clothes on top if it is cold, or for summer nights, these pants donât expose babyâs legs as much as regular pants do, which you donât want when it is cold)
Sweaters (couple heavier ones and couple light ones, preferable without a hood, hoods just donât seem comfortable for baby to lay on)
Pack of socks
Pack of hats
Couple going out outfits, but donât buy anything less than 0-3 months (Babies really do grow fast)
Receiving Blankets (get as much as you can) I use them as towels after giving baby a bath, swaddling, diaper changing cover, etc.
Swing
Bassinet (or just a crib) or playpen (some come with little bassinet for baby to sleep in and changing table, and also can be used instead of a crib when baby gets older)
Crib/Bassinet sheets
Bathtub- we use Fisher-Price Precious Whale and we like it so far, its lightweight, cheap, and has plenty of room for bigger baby (and can be used from newborn size)
Baby Shampoo and Body wash
Grooming Kit
Wash cloths
I would actually make a medicine kit-get fever reducing meds, gripe water (naturally calming) etc
Breastfeeding pillow
Nipple cream
Electric Breast Pump (with all the essentials like storage bags)
Bottles
Formula (just in case, get one can, we use Babies R Us Advantage, its comparable to Similac Advance but almost 50% cheaper and just as goodâ¦.we tried both)
Bibs (preferably that have the closing tab on the side instead of the back, I found it was more comfortable for my baby)
Drying rack
Microwave sterilizer
Bottle warmer (very very useful if bottle feeding)
Formula Dispenser
Pacifiers (My son loves Avent, plus it comes with a cap so the pacifier stays clean)
Diaper Genie (I heard it was useless, well when my sonâs poo started smelling, it wasnât useless anymore!)
Thermometer if it doesnât come with the grooming kit, which it should
Diaper Bag (although a big purse with lots of pockets and compartments will do)
Toys (babies love toys that make noise, like rattles)
For later: High Chair, walker( or jumperoo or exercauser)
I think that covers most of it. Check out craigslist.com, you will find a lot of good products for much cheaper)

When Should I Start Buying Baby Things?

Q. I am currently 20 weeks pregnant with my first child, and I am unsure of the sex of the baby.

I am going to struggle a bit financially with this baby, as I am only 18. I wasn't ready for a baby, but the BC pill failed me, so here I am dealing with it the best I can.

I know there are some things you pretty much have to buy new such as a car seat - but what else?
What things are safe to buy second-hand?
I will be buying the babies clothes, bedding, bottles etc. brand new, because I just have an issue with those items being second-hand, unless it's clothing - in good condition - passed down from someone I know.

I have about $4000 in a savings account, which was to be used for travel next year as I have just finished my high school education, but obviously now that will be going to my baby. Where I live there is also a baby bonus - which is around $5000 to help pay for baby things. $9000 seems a lot right now, but that's not going to last very long.

So basically, what should I start buying now, and what should be bought later (if anything)?

Thanks :)
The baby bonus is money given to parents by the government to help with the baby. It works out to be about $5000, but I have a feeling that it can change depending on income. It is paid in instalments over a certain period of time. Unfortunately many young mothers use the money for themselves, and not for their babies, which is sad.

If you don't mind, I'd love that list of all the baby stuff I will need!

To the answerer that said I am ignorant, and just a poor teenager; I'll have you know that I have gone from part-time work to full-time work now that I have finished school. I have worked for the same company for 3 and a half years. I am on the highest salary per hour of people my age. I am not poor, as I am capable of saving. I want the best for my child, and that means I will not use second-hand bottles (think of the germs, people!) or stained clothing. Many couples with both partners working struggle financially when they have a baby. So keep your ignorant opinion to yourself.
THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who answered my question kindly. It helps me to feel like people actually understand me.

I am deferring from university for two years, to spend time with my little one, and to work to save as much money as possible. After the two years are up, I am going to study nursing or teaching. My baby will be left with my mother, or enrolled in the childcare facility of the university if it is not too expensive. I see childcare as a good opportunity for socialisation.

I already have my own car, thank goodness, because that is another huge expense I don't have to deal with.

Answer
There are plenty of things you can buy second hand!
I would try for everything, besides clothes, bibs and diapers haha.
I understand that you find it a little icky, and believe me, I completely agree.
But if you are that desperate, it's always possible.

If you were to buy EVERYTHING new (my man and I calcuated everything at Babies R Us) it would be around $3,000 in the end. This includes crib, car seat, stroller etc.

Then you can count on $200-$300 a month for everything.
This includes diapers, little clothing items (new socks, bibs), baby powder, baby oil, formula (if you choose to use it)

You're in a much better situation than a lot of young mom's.
What is this baby bonus? Haha I'd love that to be explained, I am intrigued.

Generally, a lot women don't start to buy things until their third trimester begins.
This way they can have their baby shower first, and buy whatever else is needed.
Plus, since there are so many things that can go wrong in early pregnancy, a lot of women prefer to wait.

If you want a list of EVERYTHING you probably need, I can help out with that, we've done all of the math haha.

Right now, you can get the huge things out of the way.
Buy the crib, changing table, dresser(if you're buying one).

This way, once you find out the sex, you can get all the extras.

Have you decided what you are using: Cradle, Basinette, Crib etc.

Also, consider Travel System Strollers.
They are a car seat and stroller all in one. Basically you lift the car seat in and out of the stroller. It's cheaper than buying both, and very very convenient.

***EDIT
Here's a quick list of baby basics.
This doesn't include diapers, baby health stuff, bathing stuff, feeding etc.
Just some basic gear and equipment and nursery items most first mom's like to get:
Not ALL of it is necessary of course.

⢠Glider (It's like a rocking chair. Very important for comfy breastfeeding etc)
⢠Crib
⢠Changing Table
⢠Storage Unit/Dresser
⢠Stroller
⢠Playard
⢠Video Monitor(or just a regular baby monitor)
⢠Bedding Set (crib stuff - usually includes bumper, sheets and a few other things)
⢠Hamper
⢠Rug
⢠Diaper Stacker
⢠Blanket
⢠Mobile
⢠Jumperoo or Walker
⢠Swing
⢠Bouncer (it's kind of like a mini bed that bounces, most babies love it)
⢠Activity Gym
⢠Crib Soother (that thing you attach to the crib that gives out soothing sounds)
⢠High Chair
⢠Changing Pad (it's something you can lay on your floor at home to change them on, instead of using the changing table every time.
⢠Boppy
⢠Sling
⢠Changing Pad (portable one, it folds up for easy transport)
⢠Wipe Warmer (not completely necessary, but I like to think babies appreciate it, not so cold on their bottoms)
⢠Car Seat Toy (like a mobile you attach to the handle for entertainment)
⢠Room Thermometer (just to make sure it's a good temp in the nursery, babies are very aware of temperature)
⢠Head Support (a kind of slip-in headrest, mostly for the car seat, so their heads don't bounce around)
⢠Receiving Blankets
⢠Bibs
⢠Swaddle Blankets
⢠Pacifiers
⢠Bottle Brush
⢠Bottle Drier
⢠Bottles
⢠Diaper Genie
And then of course you can buy more things for the nursery. Find a set that matches your original bedding set. You can usually find matching things like lamps, wall decals, window valance etc.

I went to a bunch of websites, and the best deals were from Babies R Us or WalMart. EVERYTHING totalled is around $3200, minus shipping, and that's not even getting all the crappiest items. We chose medium-priced ones.

And keep in mind, if you are having a baby shower, a lot of these items will be bought for you.
You can even register at Babies R Us or WalMart, Target or whatever.
Buy the big things as soon as you like, and leave the little things like bibs, bottles, pacifiers, diaper genie for after the baby shower. No sense is doubling up on things you only need one of especially.

Good luck with everything.

Most motivating agility dog toy?

I love Agi

Hey everyone, I am looking for the most motivating dog toy out there to use while training agility w/ my 2 Australian Cattle Dog mixes. Thanks!
I am interested in the KONG wubba......

Answer
I like a toy that will toss well & they can tug with me too. Then I can use the toy in different ways to encourage or reinforce different behaviors. My guys favorite motivational toy is always a cloth frisbee. Of course I can throw it, but they love to tug with it also. They love the polar fleece braided tugs. Great for tugging, but only toss fair. My BC girl loves those cheap rope knot balls with the handle (they win them at trials a lot). Nice to toss for fetch or she adores tugging with them also. A lot of dogs really like a riot stick. Mine aren't that enchanted. My guys like the flappy stick better. Like a riot stick, but no handle. It has strips like a kong wubba to tug at either end. The kong wubba itself is quite nice too. I have a few of those, different sizes. Both dogs really enjoy them. Throw well for fetch & good to tug too. My BC girl Lyra in my avatar, her "be-all-end-all" reward is water. The baby pool or water trough to get in, but the absolute BEST reward for her is the hose! My old MACH girly Chynna, she didn't care much for toys ( I wish I had built up her toy-drive early on), but she absolutely adored tugging her leather leash. Huge motivation, reward & stress reliever for her. Always pumped her up big-time before a run. God, I miss that dog!
Try different toys, see what works well for you & your dogs. See what really turns them on. Use that toy to help build their toy-drive. But don't be afraid to switch it up sometimes too! All these toys I keep for just training & playing with me. This way they keep a very high reward value. Also keeps them from tearing them up! lol

What are some good math/science activities to do with older toddlers?

Linzbr

Answer
Math:
-Using muffin tins for 1-to-1 correspondence with toys, placing one toy in each section.
-Working with nesting cups or nesting blocks while talking about size comparisons and height.
-Matching games with socks, cards, or sets of toys (For example, combine pieces from two shape sorters, and encourage children to find the pairs that match by shape and color.)
-Scooping and pouring with sand or dry rice, filling and emptying containers of various sizes and using scoops of various sizes.
-Working with unit blocks, talking about shapes as they play.
-Using flannel board pieces, puppets, or toys to add and remove pieces as you sing "5 Little Ducks" or "5 Little Monkeys".
-Using glue sticks and basic shapes cut from construction paper to make collages.
-Sorting sets of similar toys (such as trucks, rubber ducks, or balls) from smallest to largest.

Science:
-Playing with flashlights
-Painting with ice cubes tinted red, yellow, and blue with food coloring
-Exploring shadows outside on a sunny day
-Painting with water using large brushes outdoors on a warm day, and noticing as it dries
-Going for a walk to collect leaves, rocks, and/or other natural objects
-Observing grasshoppers, ladybugs, or other non-toxic insects in a bug box. (Provide leaves/twigs for cover and a damp cotton ball for moisture, and turn loose again after a few hours.)
-Exploring fresh fruits of veggies using senses. How does each look inside and out, feel, smell, taste?
-Blowing soap bubbles.
-Exploring materials with different textures (burlap, silk, terricloth, etc.) with hands and/or bare feet

baby interactive toys?

rosey

What kind of interactive theme based activity centers are available for infants and toddlers? i.e. nursery rhymes, science, math, geography, music,etc... Do babies like this type of product and which would you recommend? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
I prefer the baby gym made by Selecta. Selecta makes quality wooden toys. They are more expensive, but well worth it! Babies benefit from exploring their environment; themes are not really necessary.

Electronic Kids Toy Late 80s Early 90s?

I can't remember what its called and its driving me crazy. Its not speak and spell and I had two late 80s early 90s,it was an electronic learning system, battery operated,I had one in red and one in blue and one was to help learn spelling and one math and the spelling one had a hang man type game on it,anyone know what I'm talking about? Thanks.

Answer
Yes, there were electronic toys in the 80s and 90s

Space soldier toys from the 90s, please help!?

ascrit

I am trying to identify some toys that I used to have, they were little space soldiers that had magnets on their feet. All of their vehicles (rocket ships, tanks, etc) also had magnetic panels and could could connect (i.e. a rocket could pick up a tank.)

Does anyone remember these awesome toys?

Answer
Actually, they were
from the 80's and
resurfaced in the 90's

" STARCOM:
U.S. Space Force "
http://www.toyarchive.com/STAForSale/NEW2001+/Starcom/StarcomIndexPic1a.jpg
Coleco
circa- '86 -'89

" Like many 1980âs toys, the Starcom line was developed
as part of the merchandising for a cartoon. Starcom: The
U.S. Space Force was a syndicated series that depicted the
adventures of an American astronaut brigade as they fought
off attempted invasions by Shadow Force, a nasty collection
of aliens and robots led the nefarious Emperor Dark. The
heroes on the Starcom side included ace pilots John âSlimâ
Griffin and James âDashâ Derringer.

The coolest thing about the Starcom toy line was its use of
Magna Lock technology.
Basically, what this meant is that the action figures had tiny
magnets implanted in their feet. Not only did this allow them
to stand on the vehicles and playsets without falling off, but it
also activated nifty gizmos in the playsets. For instance, you
placed a figure in the elevator of the Starbase Station, its Lock
magnets would cause the elevator to rise to the top by itself.
On the same playset, if you put a figure in one of cannons,
the Magna Lock magnets would activate a mechanism that
made it turn and fire its rockets. "

Q. I have a friend who's turning 13 and I'm helping her plan her party. We are in seventh grade, and her birthday is in January. I know it's early, but we need to start planning so we can find our budget. We live in Florida.
Thanks!

Answer
Movie party theme for hall or at home. Have a movie themed party. They sell decoration kit and lots of decorations for this at oriental trading. com. If at home watch a cool movie, have popcorn and all kids of candy and junk food. Make or buy pizza and have sundaes. Have a sleep over with the girls if you want. Have a dance in a hall with this theme. Have everhyone wear a movie star costume. Decorations:
More neon themes go along with Glow in the dark.

These appetizers were great at our sweegt 16:

Taco Dip:
2 softened cream cheese.
1 16oz sour cream
1 packet taco seasoning.

Anyway they are perfect for parties, hand size, neat. You buy shaved ham, beef and turkey. You put lettuce on if you want and some cut cheese into triagles and put on. Also put real butter on on side of the bun inside of course. And have mustard and mayo packets on ice in case anyone wants that.

GAMES:
Twister
limbo
get a pinata that matches a theme if you choose a theme.

Put a certain number of candies in a pie plate, fill with cool whip or whip cream and guests have to hold their hands behind their back and find the candies to win a prize.

Buy poster of a cute actor or singer (get one of a girl and one of a boy if you are having a coed party). Anyway, put lipstick on the guest, blind fold them and then spin them a couple times and put them in front of the poster and they have to kiss it. My daughter is 14 and has grown away from her dolls...frilly things etc. Christmas is coming!!!! She reads tons, so I know I'll be buying out the book store. Now she's getting into all the electronic stuff. Phones, mp3...4..5 whatever. It's all greek to me. Any ideas' what I could get her???? Thanx PiNk

Answer
Your such a cool Mom! <3
I'm 15, I like books and electronics too~

If she doesn't already have one, get her an i-pod. A video one is best (Because they hold pictures/text/games/and have lots of cool settings!) , this model here http://gillinc.blogspot.com/uploaded_images/video-ipod-766994.jpg
Here's a bit on i-pods http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Classic(but wikipedia sometimes has wrong info so don't take every lil' thing to heart)
My ipod was bought new, but a lot cheaper than those...They're more expensive if they have more gigabytes or memory.
Mine has 80, but that's way, way too much. I have over 3000 songs and 50 videos and I'm not even 1/4 of the way through the memory!

If you get her that, maybe some accessories to go with it?
An i-tunes card to get her started (Songs & movies cost money unless downloaded illegally)
A slip cover/case
If she's the type that isn't worried about others hearing her songs, than a speaker is good. (Be sure to check that it's compatable with the ipod! My mom got me the wrong kind of speaker! XD)

Barnes and Noble gift cards are fun too~

You can get her a stuffed animal. She might be growing out of frills and dolls (I never even had that stage) but a nice soft, not overly gaudy/cute squeezable toy is always loved. (Ones that's not too stiff & one that has limp limbs so you can squeeeeeeeeeeeze it!)

Do you know if she's interested in video games? Try to find out what gaming platform she likes (Gameboy DSi, playstation 2 ect ect.)
I would recomend the Gambeboy DSi because it has a larger screen than the old DS and cameras. (The DS has lots of fun games for girls our age. Try Cooking Mama 2 ect)

Food's always appreicated too~ (At least by me~) Special candies, cookies, and cakes are a nice change!

Another slightly different thing, maybe she wants some changes to her room? If she's growing out of frills...
Maybe a new bedspread, lamp, carpet, or wall color.
See if she's unhappy with her room. (I personally am hoping for a new bedspread this year)
You should ask and try to make her hint at what she wants though. Since I don't know her well enough!

Good luck!

i need assistance creating a homemade toy for toddlers?

Grace

have to design and construct an educational toy for toddlers. I need some assistance please. It must be age appropriate, durability, concept development, attractiveness, and safety. Must use all senses!!!

PLEASE TELL ME YOU CAN ASSIST OR GUIDE ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTIONS!

Answer
I would make a "taggy" ball. You can construct it out of fabric in 6 panels like a beach ball and sew ribbon tags into the seams. When you are stuffing it, add a few jingle bells so it makes noise (sew it shut tightly so it is not a choking hazard). Use different colored ribbons so you can use it for color ID games and counting practice as well as gross motor and social games. Use varied textures of ribbon like grosgrain, satin and velvet so it is a tactile experience for fine motor development too. I wouldn't use anything battery operated that speaks or lights up as these toys do not foster development like a toy that allows a child to use their own imagination and creativity. In fact, I don't even allow battery operated toys in my house!

Have fun!

How to make a Homemade toy for Toddler?

Grace

I am trying to create a homemade toy for my toddler. I am a stay at home mom of twin girls. They show that they are tired of playing with the same toys and so my husband and I thought it'll be a good idea if I came up w/a homemade toy. But, Im stuck.
Please help me.

We'd like it to have a meaningful concept as well as it being safe. Dont' want pieces to easily come off and find them in their mouths!

Thanks in advance for assistance!

Answer
If no-one can give you an Idea for a toy try this.

It worked on my parents, worked on me and my siblings, its working on my kids.

Pack up 2/3rds of the toys into thirds, rotate them every three months, they think its the best things ever. (just pack away those that they don't play with anymore)

Alternatively click on the source links and have you kids help make them!!!

Harry Potter vs. Twilight?

karolina

Which books series do you prefer more? (Dont think about the movies.) btw Harry Potter is the best ever!!!!!!!!!

Answer
Harry Potter is far better than Twilight. Not only is their more depth and a mystical quality in my personal opinion Twilight lacks, Stephanie Meyer's writing style is for an addicted fan girl.

The character Edward is created just for the "OMG HOT" response.

Harry Potter is not made just for a girls to swoon over, in my personal observation more males enjoy Harry Potter than Twilight.

I am a 17 year old female and I do not enjoy the Twilight series. I find it to take everything known about the vampire fiction, crumples it in a ball and throws it out the window. The results are irritating and depressing.

No fangs, sparkle in the sun? What is this? Some kind of a joke? Vampires are supposed to be SCARY! They aren't some shiny toys. They are night crawlers, the creepy family living on top of the hill no one ever sees... the family that after they moved in disappearances occurs? They aren't the Cullen (no matter how hot) sparklers.

As the Twilight series is great for the targeted audience, Harry Potter addresses a wider crowd. Those fans of Harry Potter who shoved it aside for this series should be ashamed!

Anyway... Harry Potter all the way!

Where can I find some unique Harry Potter toys?

free_2_ear

My nephew is really into Harry Potter. It seems as though he owns just about everything made that has anything to do with Harry Potter. I would like to find something original that he may not have yet. I don't have a list or anything of what he does have, but any suggestions could help. Thanks!

toddler learning?

Sue G

My daughter is a 2 and a half. What are some good learning activities i can do with her?

Answer
Hopefully these activities will give you an idea about what your child meant like to do..
. Dump and Fill
Toddlers like to dump and fill just about anything. Be sure to supply the children with plenty of opportunities to dump and fill. Coffee cans and boxes make great items to be filled. You can have the children fill with toys, tops from baby food jars, and other toddler safe items.
2. Cause and effect
Toddlers will love to play games where they can see the cause and effect. A simple lightswitch can be a source of entertainment, (as well as the not so desirable toilet flushing LOL), toys that resond by touch, like music books, and pop up toys, jack in the boxes and activity centers are great toys for this age.

Peanut Butter Play Dough
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup corn syrup
1 1/4 cup nonfat dry milk
1 1/4 cup confectioner's sugar
Mix then knead the ingredients. Let your child mold and play with the dough... and when they are done.. They can eat it.

Bubbles
Toddlers are amazed by bubbles. Bubbles can catch a toddlers attention for at least 15 minutes.

Sand and Water Play
A dishtub filled with sand or water can provide entertainment as well as a great learning experience. Ideas to add to water play: a drop of food coloring, turkey basters, funnels, cups, dish soap, boats, plastic toys, brushes and sponges, ice, cold or warm water, baby dolls or play dishes to wash, toddler safe balls, items that will sink or float.
Chocolate Pudding Finger Paint
Mix instant chocolate pudding according to the directions and paint on wax paper. Great for children who like to eat their art:)

How old was your toddler when they learned to play with their toys the proper way?

Hillbilly

My lil girl has a ton of toys. Most of what she has is made to be tossed and dragged. A few things I'm scared she's going to break. My parents got her the Mickey that dances and sings the hot dog song because she loves that song so much. She loves playing with the Mickey but she will drag it and pick him up while he's dancing, I'm scared she's going to break it. How old when she will learn what to do with what toys?

Answer
Young children are constantly developing, changing, becoming interested in new things, and seeing things in new ways. If you keep toys around long enough, you'll see that your daughter changes the ways she interacts with them and the aspects of them she finds interesting. My son (27 months) has had a set of wooden blocks with letters on them for over a year. First he loved to love to throw them. Then he loved to knock them over. Then he started to stack them carefully. Then he noticed the letters on them and would hold them up and tell me what letter it was. Now he plays with them by asking me to hide one and he'll find it. The point is, kids go through millions of phases and they way they interact with each of their toys will change continuously. In the meantime, if the way she is currently choosing to play with a toy is harmful to her or the toy, put it away for a few weeks and try again another time when she might use it differently.

How to handle a toddler tantrum? please help!?

Melissa

My child had the meltdown of all meltdowns today. It happened in the checkout of a store because she wanted a ball that she saw. She was screaming at the top of her lungs, which continued during the drive home and at home also. It lasted at least a half hour.

This is how I handled it: I pretty much ignored her. I told her to stop but after that I ignored her. When she started to calm down I then talked to her but she started right up again. So I ignored her again. When she finally calmed down for real I knelt down and talked to her and then hugged her. The tantrum was completely over and that was hours ago. Did I do the right thing?

I appreciate any advice . Thanks!!!!
my daughter is 22 months old

Answer
I think you did the right thing. This has happened to me and my 20 month old daughter when she wanted another Wiggles toy. I diverted her attention to something else and she forgot all about it.

Remember that, good behaviour management in the early years can prevent that 'time bomb' from exploding when your infant reaches the teen years. A fully fledged tantrum is your toddler's way of telling you things are NOT going their way, or they simply want your attention.

Often parents forget that the most effective secret weapon - their toddler's attention span, is still very short. Your toddler will go from tears to laughter FAST, if their interest is diverted.

Be attentive when your child needs your attention, but ignore times when they are screaming - simply to get their way. Treat your child the same whether you are home or not, or your child will quickly learn where they can misbehave and get away with it.

Read books on child behaviour and choose a method which works for not only your child, but also, you the parent, then stick to it.
Praise when you can - it works wonders.

toddler learning?

Ideas to add to water play: a drop of food coloring, turkey basters, funnels, cups, dish soap, boats, plastic toys, brushes and sponges, ice, cold or warm water, baby dolls or play dishes to wash, toddler safe balls, items that will sink or float.

whats a good way to store more breakable toys like a kids camera, keyboard etc?

kat

its not a huge room but its not tiny either. At the moment there is my daughter's single bed, my baby's cot, two sets of drawers and her bedside table. so im just trying to find a way to store these bigger toys so they dont get wrecked.

Answer
Buy a clear plastic storage box-

But why boy toys if you are scared they will get wrecked? Kids will almost always wreck any expensive toy given the time... just let them play with it, but if you are really against it being accessible, put it in a storage box, its hard for kids to undo the clips

Movie where kid plays toy keyboard, then aliens come?

placerinro

A Little boy plays these keys and aliens show up. All I really can remember, movie has not came out recently, thats all I know.

Answer
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind

Do wooden toys make a difference for children's development (Montessori)?

MCi

If so, why and how? I would like some insight from preschool/Montessori teachers or daycare providers. Thanks

Answer
Some toys are better made of wood.

Wooden blocks are best to start with, and for advanced builders. They make good sounds when knocked over by older infants / younger toddlers, and school age kids can build very elaborate towers with them.

The wooden Thomas the trains are the best. Kids prefer them. They are "kid powered" so the kids actively use them, not just watch them go like battery operated ones. They feel solid in their hands.

Wood acts differently from plastic, and feels different. A variety of textures can only help their brains grow.

I have to agree, what type of toy doesn't teach kids something? I do give many toys for specific skills etc. but if they are handling something with their hands, they are learning.

Wooden toy boxes - do you find them useful?

IamMom

My mother in low would like to get us a wooden toy chest, saying that they are great to keep all toys organized and that it will help my kids to keep their room nice and clean. I am not sure if it is gona work and if my kids will like it. This wooden toy boxes seem to be very bulky... Do you have one? Would you suggest it?
now I am almost convinced that we will get a toy box made of wood... but never knew that there are literally hundreds of ideas...http://www.1888toys.com/Wooden-Toy-Boxes-Painted-Toy-Chests-Toy-Storage-Benches-Toy-Bins.aspx
- toy chest made of solid cherry wood
- princess style toy box
- toy chests for girls and toy boxes for boys
oh my...

Answer
We have got our first wooden toy box when my son just turned one year old... It is a really life saver... All our toys are now in one place, plus we got a toy chest with 3 dividers, so no mess at all. We got a toy box of real solid wood and it blends into our room decor just perfectly. This is the site we got it from http://www.1888toys.com/Wooden-Toy-Boxes-Painted-Toy-Chests-Toy-Storage-Benches-Toy-Bins.aspx

my 7 yr old brother has very odd behavior why could that be please help?

Leah D

hello

1st let me start by saying im 22 not some child with questions my brother is 7 and im very scared for him because the behavior i see is very abnormal for a 7 year old.

i have already told my parents to bring him to see a therapist or something so please don't tell me to do that im just here to let u know what i see and maybe what u guys think about it...

ok so he is 7 just turned 7 on the 29th of december 2011 hes a great kid in general. now he may be 7 but he is 2 years behind because he is mentally challenged he can walk talk ect...hes just 2 yrs behind so even tho hes 7 hes more like a 5 year old. but even for a 5 year old this behavior i see is kinda scary he kinda is in between 5 and 7 (meaning he shows acts like a 5 years old then others like a 7 year old)....

so to get down to what he does that to me is odd and iv never seen before in any other 5 or 7 yr old we have a 5 yr old boy plus a 9 yr old boy and they have never acted like that..
the 7 year old when he asks for something and if its not a good time for him to have it and u tell him nicely no well like any other child he beggs for u to say yes but when u continue to say no he will then stamp his feed go in a corner talk to him self hit the walls and like any adult would do with that we go to him rather it be me my mom my dad someone will go talk to him we get down on are knee to be at him level and we ask nice whats wrong how come ur doing that

he will say things like i cant tell u, i don't know, i don't want to tell you, but we try to be persistent on getting it out of him by talking calmly will then Start to bit him self he will full force slap him help he will take his nails and from the top of his head right to his chin he will scratch him self very hard to the point it leaves marks on him.

this is what he does every single time he don't want to do something don't like something or doesn't want to hear what ur saying.

he laughs and plays with his 2 other brothers even with my dad then he does things like that its scary and i know that some hits will hit them self stamp there feet when angry but the 7 years don't just do that its like he deliberately hurts him self im going to continue to tell my parents he needs to see a therapist they do agree with me and there going to see what they can do and call some people

i don't want people to just judge and say mean things about this cuz if that is what ur going to do then don't bother commenting on this cuz if u say mean things i will report u its not nice to judge

and i will tell u right now its not abuse i live in a house with 12 people we are a very loving caring family these kids have everything all game Systems toys ect....my mom and dad always spend time with the kids sometimes all together sometimes one at a time they get outings with them ect... and im 22 not once or ever has my parents ever abused me so don't say sounds like abuse so i know 110% its NOT ABUSE

Answer
I'd start by sating: it takes a village to raise a child, but i don't understand what ur bro has, anyway if he is very mentally challenged then that us quite normal, there is people who are trained to dealing with kids like that, but if he is not very much challenged, well there is really nothing to do except raise him as a healthy kid, it's wrong to let him have his way all the time, he maybe late but not stupid, he figured out that acting like this will get him what he wants, it's pretty hard you to watch a child hurt himself but you have to get a grip, make him not do that and dpn't let him have his way, eventually he will abide and understand that the old trick got old and doesn't work anymore.

what do you consider a spoiled toddler?

Loving

hehe!

Answer
1 Any toddler who has everything and plays with none of it is spoiled.

2 Any toddler who doesn't try and talk but points, pouts, cries and gets it.

3 Any toddler who climbs all over the booth at a restaurant or runs around and then is given ice cream to stop them from screaming.

4 Any toddler who gets the toy(s) from the store juat becasue they started to cry and mommy is afraid someone would look at her over it

5 Any toddler who does the exact opposite of what there parents tell them too all the time

6 Any toddler who when not hungry, hurt or tired uses tantrums to control parents/siblings or care givers.

I have a toddler - i know what tough love is...

If she sees a toy she wants and we don't want to get it or can't afford to at that time we explain that too her - and walk away, if she cries she gets my husbands cell phone, if that doesn't distract her - we leave! We can always shop at another time

My daughter has never been allowed out of the high chair or booster seat at a restaurant - she doesn't fuss, cry, run around or carry on at restaurants - we have a no playing rule while we are eating - and we talk to her (don't ignore her) at dinner - if she did act up I would take her outside to our car till she calmed down and then maybe take her back in if food hadn't been served yet - if food had been served my husband would get doggy bags - pay the check and we would leave

At home my daughter has thrown tantrums before - she gets a little lead way here - I try and talk to her and calm her down first, then distract her, then if she refuses to calm down - she gets put in her room to throw her fit, after she calms down I go talk to her and explain the why of whatever set her off, get her into a new activity and of course comfort and reassure her.

My daughter appears to have too many toys according to my mother in law, but we rotate her toys every 2-4 weeks or so - when she is sleeping I put away some toys and bring out other toys - its like christmas for her every couple of weeks - she forgets she has certain toys and it constantly renews her interest in what she is playing with. (works with children up to about age 8 or so)

Lastly - I think "spoiled" is a condiontiong from the way parents react to there children rather than a phase - if you don't let them get away with things from the get go, they never push the limits over and over and over

Consitency is key - never give in - teach them a tantrum gets them nothing and pretty soon they will stop trying to use it to get what they want.

Sorry I know this is long, but its one topic I really feel needs to be brought to parents attention.

why do we donate toys for toddlers?

steph g

Answer
Because there are less fortunate kids out there that would love a nice christmas......I dont understand the question.............

Has anyone seen The Last Mimzy? Does it have demonic influence or magical forces?

LadyDeathS

I haven't seen it yet, but by the previews, I thought it was about 2 kids that find an object from the future that helps them save the world. If you've seen the movie, does it have demonic influence such as magic? I'm asking because I want to take my 3-yr old, but think she may be scared.

Answer
The original story definitely had NOTHING about demonic influences. The movie is supposed to be a slightly up-dated and revised telling of a great science fiction story by Henry Kuttner, C.L. Moore's husband using the alias "Lewis Padgett." It's a short story called "Mimsy Were the Borogoves." It's worth reading, trust me! Excellent story. ...

The movie has wonderful special effects. I think the kids will like it. I know people who saw it with their kids and liked it.

Yes it was a science fiction story and although it's more of a kids' movie the way it's being portrayed in the film, it be interesting to see if the movie does the original story justice.

Basically the original story was about 2 kids who find toys that are from the future, some scientist tinkering with a time travel machine had sent them back as an expirement in the story. He wasn't trying to deliberately change history, he just wanted to see if he could send something and his kids' old toys were handy. Anyway, the children who find them are changed by them, made smarter. When they read ALICE IN WONDERLAND and the works of Lewis Carroll, the kids find an important clue in "Mimsy Were the Borogroves" that lets them tap into a new form of power.

Try it!

Is The Golden Compass a very demonic movie for children?

Go For Bro

My girlfriend's mom is a Jewish Messianic and told me yesterday that the movie I watched, The Golden Compass was demonic and is really bad for children to see. She also said that stories like Harry Potter and Lord of the Flies are also demonic. Even Pokemon is demonic because it means Pocket Monster in Japanese and she told me that her friends told her that they have seen Pokemon figures moving by itself during the night because there were little demons living inside those plastic toys. I personally find this very comical but I still listened to her and made her feel that she is right although I think she is going way out of the line in the her knowledge of the spiritual realm.

Answer
I too have seen the Golden Compass, and there is nothing particularly demonic about it. I am sure that your girlfriendâs mom is adamant about the supposed Satanic undertones of the Golden Compass because the Catholic League has recently published articles , is involved in a mass email campaign and is aggressively hitting the talk show circuit stating that the Golden Compass is actually promoting atheism for kids, and teaches kids anti-Catholic propaganda.

From reviews I have read concerning the Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, of which the Golden Compass is based on the first book in the series, there is much criticism explicitly of Catholicism in the books, and Christianity is ridiculed in general. In fact the series ends with a major protagonist killing God. Philip Pullman is a very public atheist and his trilogy, does according to those critics who have read it, have an atheistic bent to it.

Yet, from the commentary written by film critics, the actually cinematic version of the book, âThe Golden Compassâ, is almost entirely stripped of controversial content. The Magesterium , which in the book actually is an explicit metaphor for the Catholic Church, is turned into a generic totalitarian institution, with no direct connection to Roman Catholicism. The daemons that are paired with all living creatures in the film, and the issue concerning âdustâ, which is a preoccupation of one of the main characters, loses its spiritual significance in the film rendition of âThe Golden Compassâ.

After watching the film for myself, I can say that the film critics were right that the âThe Golden Compassâ is fairly innocuous as movies go. All the hype about how atheistic the film was is just that, pure hype. The film makers took the easy and cowardly way out and denuded the film of all things that could have the potential to be inflammatory. Besides, when all these religious groups rail against the movie all they are doing is sensationalizing it, and thus making it more popular than ever. Will these people ever understand that the more you forbid something, the more people will want to see it?

what is a good air soft gun?

Brendan L

im looking online for a good air soft gun to get. a hand gun spring. whats the difference from the gun shooting .12 and .2grams? whats better whats a good gun you recommenced?

Answer
.20's are heavier and actually quality (some). Same kinetic energy, lower muzzle velocity, greater accuracy, won't destroy your airsoft gun.

Some of the best spring pistols are listed below.

What ammo does this air soft gun use?

I don't know much about these things so if don't mind telling me what kind of ammo this gun uses. Also I was thinking of getting this gun with my birthday money and was wondering if it is worth buying an air soft gun.

Answer
Air soft guns fire small plastic BBs ranging in weight (the most common being .12g, .20g, and .25g). Air soft is a fun sport and is often seen as a cheaper and more realistic version of paintball. The shots do sting a bit but not too bad. So if you don't mind little tiny bruises and a quick stinging feeling your good to go with Air Soft. Air Soft guns come as either spring powered, electric or gas powered. The gas and electric are going to be a little more expensive but overall they work better depending on your style of gameplay. Good luck!

good toy dump truck for 2 year old girl?

it8eazy

i only see my kid once a week, with me being military, and its usually at the park. whenever some kid has a toy dump truck there, she falls in love with it and thats all she wants to do. seeing this im wanting to buy her a dump truck, but there's just so many. im wanting something fairly inexpensive, maybe 25-30 bucks tops. im concerned with some, cause she pushed some of the kid's trucks and the dump bed flies up and smacks her in the face, or it shoots out in front of her and face first into the sand. so that being said, what kinda toy dump truck you guys recommend?

Answer
My two year old daughter has a Tonka dump track.
Get one with a plastic lining so the bed wont cut her lip if it pops up? Ones with bigger tires stay grounded better. She also would probably like it is there was a lip or wall on the back of the bed so she can run around with it and not have her toys fall out. It probably doesnt have to be a dump truck if you are worried about the bed flipping... it could be a monster truck or a jeep too. You could even take her with and let her pick exactly what shed wants.

My 2 years old girl doesn't like toys!!?

ALC

Why my 2 years old girl doesn't like any toy? she never stick to any kind of toys.
Also I have problem to make her listen to me! She is just stubborn, I mean she doesn't do what you ask her to do, not because she doesn't want to, but because she want to not agree with anybody.. Is that make sense?
Finally, when she wants something, and I deny it from her she will start crying and not stop until she get it!!
I am tired from that and I don't know what I can do. any help can give me a hope. any guide, any site, and advice, or any previous experience could help. she is my first daughter and the only kid that I have.

Answer
Sounds like you are stressed out. This age is the time you should be enjoying your daughter...
I gave another user this answer and seems to help me.

I'm sorry to hear that your having a difficult time with your toddler. First of all it's totally normal for your toddler to behave that way however, the key to successful parenting during this stage is to guide and channel his behavior in a positive manner.
For example, you need to first identify why she's yelling, throwing things, hitting and kicking (if she does this). A lot of the times they just want some attention from you. Try to listen to her needs. Be consistent with your discipline (don't let her stand on the chair one day and the next day not allow her)... that sends mixed messages to her. When she hits, kneel to his level look at him in the eyes and tell him "No hitting, hitting hurts" and send her straight to time out for 30 seconds and give her the opportunity to do things right by allowing her to play with the person she hit.

Also, praise her constantly. If you are only looking at the negative things she does then you are never reinforcing the positive things she does. Example, Jane you are sitting nicely in your chair, or you doing a great job playing with your toys/ sibling or wow, Jane you ate very well. The more praise the more likely she will continue with tha good behavior.

These are just some of the things I do with my toddler. I must admit that I had the same exact problem since she turned 18 months but now that she's 24 months, I've applied the methods I just describe (and other ones). I've seen a 180 degree change. My daughter is so pleasant to be around again. Of course she will continue to throw tantrums and not listen but I now have the tools to make my life (and hers as well) easier.

I highly suggest you look into reading "Parenting with Purpose, Progressive Discipline from Birth to Four" by Lynda Madison Ph.D.
This book is GREAT! Gives great examples how to discipline (which means 'teach" btw)
Also look on Dr. Sear's website (America's trusted pediatrician) under discipline and behavior for more tips.

What kind of outdoor toys do you have for your 1-2 year old?

N and A's

We have a fenced in backyard and Noah will be 1 in April so I'm sure he'll be out and about back there often this summer. I'm stuck on what sorts of toys to get for him. I've been looking on Craigslist for a slide/climber of some sort and have found some cute ones.

People have asked what to get him for his birthday and I'd like to give them some ideas. Trucks and balls have already been thought of. What does your little one play with outside?
LOL, Alia's mom, I can so see Noah doing this too.... It's going to be a long summer of "Noah, don't eat that!"

I forgot a pool, duh! Thanks ladies.

Answer
What about a sand box, my son loved to drive his trucks in the sand. Sand toys.
Water table, they are great!
Swing, slide, which you already mentioned. You can put the slide in the pool, thats fun. Toys for the pool.
Sidewalk chalk
bubble machine. big hit!
Bouncy house, big hit here. they arent that expensive,$100-200 but worth it and will last for years if you take care of it.
Little tykes baseball tee. by summer he will be able to hit the ball, if not already.
A ride on toy, you could get a small motorized one, my son had a 4 wheller, it is a perfect size for a 1-2 year old.
If you are planning on staying in the home you live in now for a while, a nice wooden swingset is a fantastic investment, worth every penny, but expensive.
One of the plastic houses, we got ours like 4th hand, it is old and still looks new. I would buy one second hand. my sil got one on Craigslist for $25.
Gardening tools, Water can!..my kids love to water...anything.
A tent. my daughter has a girraffe tent, we use it inside and outside.
Small chair for outside, with a table or a picnic table for lunch and snacks, coloring, painting and messy stuff.
A shed to keep everything in...lol.
Oops! the #1 favorite outdoor toy of my sons was his bubble lawn mower. he used it for 3 years. we would bring it everywhere, he liked to mow everyones lawn..kept him busy for a long time.

toys for a 3 1/2 year old?

kirstin

My son loves to build things - do you know of any wonderful "toys" that let a child build and use their imagination? I have the usual - Legos, wooden blocks, big carboard blocks . . . I'm just looking for a new activity for him. Thank you!

Answer
Kid knex is the best construction toy my kids have ever had I bought one cheap set and my kids played with it constantly for a week I then added to it, they have played with that more than anything else since they were around three, they are six and seven now and they are still going strong. I have since introduced the version knex which is for older kids and is just as popular but the kid knex is not on it's way out yet. It is also one of the most popular thing that their friends play with they also have lego, playmobil, mechano, bricks and a room full of stuff.
