Weimaraners? Good dogs? ?

LK.P.

Good with kids or no?

Answer
They can be good with kids but it depends on the age of the kids & their behavior around dogs. I have done rescue of Weims for over 15 years & owned the breed for 25+ yrs. I do NOT recommend that Weimaraners go to a home where ANY child is under age 6. I think puppies who require a great deal of training are actually better for people who have more time for them & calmer, trained adult dogs, known to be good with children that are 4-7 yrs are better adopted by families with children.

I think the parents need to be able (as to their own schedule) to have the time & willingness to take the dog to training classes & the kid(s) need to be able to know enough NOT to tease the dog or encourage jumping up, and to be confident enough to verbally correct the dog. A dog-savvy kid can learn if the dog is bolting towards them to either; stand with their back up to a wall or tree, or to knee the dog in the chest, if it won't stop. Weimaraners are HIGH energy dogs, bred to run for hours looking for birds. They can be difficult to own if they don't get some other type of aerobic exercise, if not used for hunting. A well exercised Weim can be calm in the home.

Weims can be VERY smart (a problem-solving dog) and can be clever at getting to food left out, opening gates, cabinets, etc. So everyone needs to be on top of keeping things put up, including stuffed children's toys (or closing doors to rooms the dog should not go into). But crate & obedience training can be very helpful, in preventing problems.

The breed is extremely physically affectionate (loves to be petted, cuddle, or get on furniture) which kids enjoy, but can also be willful & manipulative/pushy as to getting its way (if they sense weakness) and dominant. So, for many people it is not any easy dog to own, especially if they are novice dog owners, and do not have the time to put into BOTH training & exercise. The Weimaraner is also a protective breed (like a GSD). They have not been fear-biters, in my 25 years of experience with the breed. If any thing they will back off or simply freeze people, they consider a threat but are usually not prone to bite, unless attacked first, by man or beast. If other kids are coming in & out of the house, the protective barking could be frightening to the visitors, or problematic for you.

Ideally, I think Weims do best in homes with single people who exercise daily or with couples either without kids or who have older kids (12+) who can take all turns both being with the dog & doing things with it. Weimaraners are sort of like an extreme sport; very entertaining & fun, who will keep you ON your toes, but are NOT for the overly busy, distracted, or lazy type of owners (who almost need stuffed or robotic dog, they can just switch off or on, as they like). The Weimaraner is more like a sports car with a LOT under the hood, not for every driver.

If money were no issue, what would you buy your kids for Christmas? ?

I would get the two youngest (4 yr olds) the Biscuit my lovin' pup, that awesome robotic dog. I would get the older two their dream guitar.

Answer
Boy oh boy I can think of tons of things. lol

1. My 7yr old son for years has been begging for a "car he can really drive" like they see at Toys R Us. But those things are over $300. As a family with 3 kids . . . well let's just say Santa would only bring him that. The livingroom would look bare on Christmas morning with just that car. lol

2. My 9yr old is begging for an American Girl doll like her friends have. Those dolls cost so much. Again with 3 kids we only can afford so much per child and one American Girl doll would eat up a lot! I don't see how parents afford those dolls. I know some families whose girls have more than one!

3. My 12yr old doesn't ask for much. (Is she really my child? lol) But she'd love all the Harry Potter books and movies. She's has said she'd love all the movies on DVD. She also wants an American Girl doll.

I personally would love a Wii. lol I'm into video games! So I'd share that with the kids too. ; )
