any pionters on small mechanical puppets?

Q. I am looking to make small mechanical puppets for halloween

Answer
What do you mean by "mechanical"? ... just jointed, or motion-oriented, or what?
And how small is "small"?

You might want to check out this page at my site on making jointed and/or flexible figures as well as puppets of various kinds:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/sculpting_body_and_tools.htm (all subcategories under "Types of Figures")

And this page has lot of lessons and info on making Halloween-type figures and other items:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/Halloween_etc.htm

And this page has some info on making "motion toys" which could have some of what you're looking for too:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/kids_beginners.htm (click on the category near bottom of list called "Other Toys")

If you want larger figures, you'd probably want to check out some of the Halloween sites for things they make:

best brand of toys for becoming a future mechanic?

Q. recommend a good brand of toys for helping a person be interested in mechanics. something that allows him to be used to
taking something apart and then be able to put it together. i've seen lego, but i want something a bit realistic, because lego is just a bunch of rectangular blocks. not very realistic. i've seen magnetix and it's not very realistic either. any suggestions?

Answer
How old is the kid? As mentioned, erector sets are a good idea. I don't think you need to be so focused on realism...the concepts of mechanical design can be gleaned from a wide variety of toys. We just bought our two year old a set of gears that assemble on a magnetic base...he loves it. (link below) In fact, the company linked to may have a lot of toys that might work for you.

I'm quite mechanically inclined and, as a kid, I loved taking stuff apart and putting it back together...things like my dad's stereo/turntable, radios, and calculator. So maby give the kid some old electronics or other items that they can just take apart to see how they work.
