stephizzal

i have an amazingly intelligent, but somewhat hyperactive dog. but he poses me a problem. he has to stay home whilst i work and he gets bored. i need a toy to keep him occupied whilst i'm out, can anyone reccomend anything? the balls that drop out treats are no good, he figures those out in 5 minutes flat

Answer
My dog has the same exact problem. he is a working dog, so he gets bored easily. I actually consulted a dog behaviorist, and she provided several affordable options. Kongs work very well, because they keep the dog busy for a pretty long time. Also, she recommended filling old cereal boxes and milk jugs with a little bit of dog kibble to entertain your dog. Rawhide is good too, but it gets boring after awhile. She recommends putting down 1 item per 30 mins that you are gone. If you are gone for an 8hr work day, that means you have to put down 16 items! However, not all of us can afford to buy a bunch of kongs at $10 each, so there is a more affordable way to do it. Here's what I've tried: First, I went to the grocery store and asked for beef bones. They were really, really cheap. Then, I took the beef bones home, emptied out the marrow, boiled them, cleaned them off, and put them in the freezer. It takes a little while, but it's worth the money you save. Each night, you can fill the bones with dog kibble, plug the ends with peanut butter or something so the kibble doesn't fall out, freeze it, and then put it down in the morning before you leave for work. Also, my dog likes to have a rawhide bone or 2 for variety.
This is just a recommendation, I hope things work out for you and your dog.

Where to get dog toys for cheap?

I have two dogs, and they're big dogs. I want to buy durable dog toys for them, but I don't want to spend too much. Where should I buy the toys from? My city doesnt have many pet stores. The only one I can think of is Petco. Does walmart or target have good dog toys?

Answer
Walmart and Target has decent dog toys, look for the stronger ones, hard rubber like Kongs are best.
Target is expensive, however, Walmart and Pet Supermarket are far cheaper. You can try flea markets and dollar stores too, sometimes you get good deals.

I have one dog who breaks all her balls, it's a compulsion, she plays with them only in order to puncture them, so I go to flea markets and get her used big inflated balls with relatively hard covers.
I buy them for a dollar or two, she plays with them a good while until she manages to puncture them, that way I don't mind if it only cost a dollar, sometimes less.

I've bought her big new balls and she deflated them before I turned my back, so that's a waste and dog's don't care if the ball is used, just clean it with bleach before you give the used toy to your dog.
