I hope I can help, because my boys are 12 and 13, and my daughter is..........3!!!!
Most kids have tons of toys/books/crafts, so you'll have more than you'd even imagine to work with.
If you want to pick up a few things, the $Dollar store is genius.
-Books...lots of books. Kids never get tired of books, parents do, but not kids.
-Stickers...but make sure they don't get put all over the house, but kids loooove them...maybe w/ a sticker book or coloring book.
-playdoh! or Crayola model magic (less messy)...when I bring this or playdoh out, I swear that my daughter dances and tells me she loves me (which tells me I don't get it out enough!)
-They'll probably have movies, and plan on watching one! Or a Dora video or something to kill a half hour, but no more really, or she won't want to go to sleep at bedtime!
-If you see a fun game or craft to bring that is cheap, do it, but otherwise just use what they have.
-Ask the parents about allergies in advance, so you can grab a little treat for her to have as a snack, maybe find out her favorite, she'll be so surprised and excited!
I think it's a great idea to get a bag going...then you can bring it to every babysitting job. Kids will love it because anything different is amazing to them, and it's so special that you brought stuff to share with them. Then the next time you babysit, they'll look forward to whatever book you brought, because they may not have it, and you do!
The biggest thing to remember, and if you have this mindset, it'll be much easier...If she goes to bed at 10:30, you have 4 solid hours to do one on one play with her. Reading, a movie, crafts, toys, snack, bedtime ritual, and then you can relax a little! But for those 4 hours, keep your mind on that little girl! You will enjoy it much more if you get into it that way, and it sounds like you are on the right track.
Good Luck, have fun, get a really fun bag ready, and I'm sure you'll have a long career of babysitting ahead of you. You'll gain wonderful experience, and make some $$$!!!

Educational toys for 3 1/2 year old girl?
Ryan
My daughter is 3 1/2 ...I'm starting Christmas shopping and everything I've written on this list screams "fun" and there is ONE educational toy on it... I can't really find any that doesn't seem too complicated for her ... she's very smart but I need something that's fun but something that's educational at the same time. Any suggestions????
The only thing I've found so far that seemed nice was the Computer Cool School..

My son turned 3 last month and he's been having a lot of fun with a Bright Baby brand sticker book. It's hard to describe, but the book is full of pages of just silhouettes, and then there are pages of stickers in the back, and you have to find the right sticker that matches each silhouette and stick it on. Once you get all the stickers in place, it forms a big picture. It's been great for his motor skills, spatial skills, concentration, etc. And not too expensive, either.....
